Best to post this on the Ford 9N, 2N, 8N site they deal with issues like yours daily. If your able to post a picture of the wiring all the better.

#1 it has an incorrect ignition switch. As for the alternator if it is a delco 10si you have the plug with the #1 and #2 wire o it. The #1 goes to the ignition switch the side that is hot when on only. The #2 goes to the big battery stud on the alternator

Bud..........3-pronged ignition switch? ........you do know electrons don't care what the color of the wire is, don't you? but you simi-care 'cuz its eazier to keep track of where the electrons are going. 2nd thing, you do know yer starter switch down by yer tranny shifter has 'nuttin' to do with ignition switch, don't you? Iff'n yer using the popular Delco ID-13 alternator, it needs a temporary shock of electricity to turn-on the alternator core. That is usually handled by the IDIOT lite. Yes, 1&2 are tied together and gitt their "shock" from yer spring loaded 3-wire ignition switch. The BACK connection goes to the BATTERY (+) usually the starter solenoid 'cuz its eazier. Remember the little middle solenoid connection fishes under the dash panel and goes to the BIG thumb switch by the tranny shifter. .......HTH, electrical Dell
