Farmall M Serial Number Question??

Hey guys, so, I just bought another Farmall M, ya, impulse buy, like candy bars in the check out line.... :p

Anyways, serial number is FBK 8717. I haven't seen the tractor yet, and can still bail out. It has no carb or mag on it, and is pretty trashed, but I am gambling that the engine is good, or at least easily fixable, which for what I am paying for it is a safe risk.

Anyways, did they make M's as gas engines OR "dual fuel" engines (like they did on the H) or are they all the same?

I know the engine that is on that trashed M of mine had a hole in the hood for what would have been the aux fuel tank.

So, question is, do you think this tractor has the same engine/compatibility as mine?

Here is a picture of it! Thanks guys! Bryce

Looks like its missing the radiator too! From the looks of it its been sitting long enough for the engine to lock up. But to answer your question, yes, kerosene, distillate and gas engine were available for the M.

Yes, he calls it a parts machine. Says that he has the rad to go with it.

He said what he knows is missing is the Carb, Mag, Starter, and some other little thing??

Nothing big, I have it all from the other M....

He says that the engine still turns over freely as well, so, that is the main reason I am after it, because mine does NOT! :p

The serial number makes it a very early 1940. The early Ms and Hs had a few things that were slightly different, but no big differences.

An M is a M in my opinion. Could easily make one from two. Most of the parts should match, for the ones that don't; just jump in the truck and go to town. How much the person asking, may I ask? From quick looks at those pictures I'd guess $500-$800 range... maybe?

Sure! He was asking $250, and I bought it for $200....

It is 200 miles away though, about 3 + hours.... I have been there before, (not to his place, but the town) and know the way I suppose. Going to go Tuesday morning to get it.

Guessing it will cost me $100 in fuel, and maybe a few bucks for food, so, I am thinking it is a $350 tractor.. Sounds ok to me! :)

Sounds like a deal to me too. Rarely do letter series go under $500, and the ones that do are usually burned or completely busted apart.

Thats what I am thinking, even if I end up having to part this one out too...

The M's around here are usually hard to come by, and a running, useable one, that is all around decent, is $2000 and up!

The H's, are just as bad! WAY to much money (in my opinion) for something in that poor of shape...

I would have given 300 at the very most for this!
