Fastest, most powerful has right of way.

Tailgater post made me think of this. Yesterday I came up behind a rear loader trash compactor. The car ahead went slowly around, I pulled slowly to left and saw that I had plenty of room before oncoming traffic got there. Two pick-up trucks followed me closely, forcing oncoming traffic to pull onto the shoulder and stop. I remember when you had to stop and wait for oncoming traffic, before crossing into the other lane, the normal procedure now is to take the lane by use of speed or acceleration and force oncoming traffic to take evasive action. I believe in and do relinquish right of way very frequently but it appears that it is now much more common to aggressively seize right of way. Which do you do?

I yield to all BMW and Mercedes drivers - those people don't know what a stop sign means, nor any other rules of the road. I don't care if they wreck their vehicle; I just don't want it to be my vehicle that they hit.

I see that every time I drive my little Saturn.

I do agree with what your saying. I try to be respectful weather I'm driving big or small.

I have the attitude that semi truck drivers are professionals and are usually courteous but I'm beginning to rethink that. There is a truck stop hear me at the interstate. Numerous times a truck has pulled out in front of me just because he's big enough to and doesn't want to wait. The last incident occurred Sunday morning. Truck pulls out in front of me close enough so that I had to brake aggressively. There was no line of traffic behind me so waiting for me would not have held me up. Driver also did not exit in such away as to be able to make the right turn and stay in his lane, so any oncoming traffic would have had to stop also. My opinion is that the driveway there is wide enough to at least have managed to stay in his lane. As I said, this has happened numerous times to me.

I just checked the local newspaper site and found a story about a 19 year old girl not waiting for a bus to finish a turn. She ended up under it.
Daily News

I live a mile and a half from I-80 and it's basically my route to anywhere. I could tell stories all day.

I've been on the receiving end of road rage by semi drivers more times than I can count. I've been run off the road a dozen times, usually by a driver who knows he's big enough and just doesn't care. One trucker tried to intentionally run me off the road for ten miles till I came to an exit and bailed out. He even followed me off the exit. When I took off down a dirt side road 60 mph, he finally gave up.

Another time a semi sat right on my rear bumper for five miles, even though he could have passed any time. We're talking like two feet or less. When we came over a hill and saw a State Trooper had a four wheeler stopped, the semi was suddenly a couple hundred yards behind me.

In both cases, I have no idea what I did to them, or what they thought I'd done. I could go on all day.

Of course, the courteous, professional drivers never get publicity.

I lived in Puerto Rico for about a month (job related). The way it works down there is that the largest vehicle with the most
aggressive driver has the right of way. Speed limit/stop/yield/turn lane signs are merely "suggestions".

haha.. I'm amazed that for the price people pay for the Beemers and Mercedes' that they would install turn signals.

It seems that our whole society has developed an "attitude", not just on the public roads--in parking lots, in stores, restaurants, just about everywhere there are people who might get ahead of us.

I live near the intersection of I-75 and I-70 in ohio.Constant semi wrecks, mostly driving to fast for curves. These young drivers can pass a driving test but can't handle a truck.A local trucking company with 350 trucks on the road has gone to automatic transmissions because of grinding gears and clutch trouble.

only ones around here that have the r/w are the beachcombers in route to their destination before it dries up,not even the law bothers them, besides their ridiculous driving behavior I've seen them block one lane of a four lane highway for or 3 miles for the better part of a day rather than using other routes available not a law man to be found to handle the problem, what the man said reminded me of when were moving the neighbors combine to the next field with a total of a 3/4 of a mile from getting on the road to the intersecting road, son was driving the combine with a 6 row 36" head and I was following about 4 car lengths behind with a loaded 10 wheeler grain truck with lights flashing on both,as we got near the turn off I noticed a black Mercedes coming up behind us so I gave a right signal and moved toward the center line slowly closing the gap between me and the combine as he slowed to turn right in case the rear of the combine got close to the center line while turning, next thing I know here comes that Mercedes around me facing on coming traffic and darted between me and the combine bearly avoiding it and acted as if we were in the wrong as he spead on his way down the road

Exactly the same in Aguascalientes, Mexico. It also helps if you can yell choice wordslouder and longer than the other guy.

Decades ago when I was stationed in Germany, they had a law (apparently) about driving on the Autobahn. You move into the left lane, pass, move back right. If someone rearends you while you were in the left lane, you were moving too slow and are at fault and get the ticket and pay the damages. That's how it was when I was there in the early '80's. That's how it should be.

I'm not a big fan of NASCAR, but admit that I'm a big fan of when someone is in the faster lane and moving slower, front corner of your vehicle uses the corner of their rear bumper, spin them out. I fully agree with that while on either the track or Interstate.

Exactly what I was thinking  But then I suppose that's part of what you don't get when it's 'German engineered'

I have noticed for a long time now that most drivers, espicialy the younger ones have the attitude me first and to #%& with everyone else.

They let you on the Internet in prison?

(quoted from post at 18:32:30 06/10/15) I call it size of way when driving my super duty.

What the warden doesn't know won't hurt him. He shouldn't leave his passwords and bank account numbers under My Documents, but since he did he should at least made them Hidden Files. I still would have found them, but would have taken me a few more seconds. Why do people leave their account numbers and passwords on their computers? Glad he did though.

Same at truckstop here. They pull out without paying any attention to traffic on the road. I 75 and US33

I read the news item 4 times. I don't expect many to agree with me, but would like everyone to read the whole post before responding.
A little background- drove commercial vehicles (big trucks, little trucks, road coach, & school bus) for over 40 years, covered 48 states & part of Canada, also carried a state issued peace officer's license for ~15 years. My most serious accident, I was hit from behind while stopped at red light, had 3 speed tickets (less than 10 mph over) lifetime. Can't quote exact rules here, but we can't do that while driving either.
IIRC, the only times a school bus has right of way are when actively loading/unloading passengers (with the red overhead lights flashing & stop sign extended) & making the required railroad crossing stop. Most states also have amber overhead lights to warn traffic that the bus is about to stop. At all other times it must follow rules of the road, the same as other traffic. The overhead lights & side stop sign are visible from front & rear, but not from the side. Being painted bright yellow does not guarantee right of way. Traffic is not required to stop for a school bus that is on a cross road or in a private driveway.
If I were investigating this accident, I would have ticketed the bus driver. Basic rule- when entering a road from a private driveway, stop & yield to approaching traffic. The bus driver had both lanes blocked while a car was approaching. Stopping with the nose of bus blocking one lane is not acceptable. The bus driver should have continued backing into the driveway far enough to clear the traffic lanes, then checked for traffic before pulling out.
The girl driving the car could also be ticketed, depending of local conditions such as rural open road, developed area, posted speed, her actual speed, etc.
