JD 6600 combine

I am looking at a JD 6600 combine with around 6500 hours on it, engine wise. Comes with a 216 grain head with crary air reel and 443 corn head. Many times I have heard the JD grain heads cannot be beat in soybeans. I have never had a JD combine, and this would be my second combine ever. What is good/bad about the 6600?

Good old combine, drawback is can be a pain changing most of the belts. plus side it gives a cleaner sample of wheat, flax and canola than the 9600. Mine does about 500 acres a year.

The only thing I see 'wrong' with them is all the V belts and complicated drives.Other than that, good machines....

If it has the pipe rear axle that will be the weak spot. I think they used that same axle in the 7720 till the later models. They always looked weak to me.

I once overheated the engine in a 1973 model while harvesting wheat in Kansas. It had a pusher fan and drew air through screen in the engine hood, the temperature gauge was behind me so I couldn't keep watching it. The screens had to be washed out several times a day.

Good combines and lots of them still being used. On the down side the unloading auger is put into the unloading position manually and it is not always easy to do. Most operators put the auger in the unloading position and leave it there while combining which is ok until you forget and get to close to a tree or other object and bend the auger. Lots of used parts though so you can keep it going for many more years.

Your 9600 will give a better sample than you say. Just don't use the book settings to do it. They are abysmal. The settings I use on my 9500 are not close to the book settings but the combine will sterilize grain if properly set. Mike
