OT--Fascinating Wildlife

Been harvesting alfalfa this week and find it fascinating to observe wildlife while in the field. In the mowing process lots of animal behavior is seen, from the swallows and martins circling and darting around the mo-co presumably to catch bugs on the fly, to small animals being killed by the mo-co. Yesterday a buzzard spotted something in the swath just two rounds behind me. Next round a coyote came trotting across the field, ran the buzzard off, and began picking at the "kill." That didn't last long, and he trotted on across the field "empty handed." Turned out it was a snake and he had no appetite for that. Then, on the road a squirrel had been hit and three buzzards were attending to that. Then, a red-tail hawk swooped down and grabbed the squirrel and flew off with it. All interesting to watch!

I've been seeing a bunch of crows following my field activities. Was watching one the other day, and happened to think I hadn't seen ant Red Wing Blackbirds. About that time two RWBs showed up and started dive bombing the crow. Cahsed him right out of sight! YESS!!!

Anyone that can watch the wildlife and not get it that God had a plan is plan dumb. We can put out wheat as wildlife food. First day few crows or doves, second or third day the turkey show up then the deer, somehow the word get around.

Sea gulls out on a lake are amazing. See one in the distance and throw a little something like popcorn on the water. He spies it and soon has buddies from all over after it. Then they get tired of it and just fly away.

It has bugged my neighbor for 15 years because I mow the riparian near our houses a little bit at a time. I found that preditors show to ambush rats and rabbits crossing mowed strips. I might mow a liitle at dawn then sit on the deck to watch while having breakfast.
Best show yet was while burning wheat stubble I decided to burn a fencerow where i planned building a new fence. Different neighbor started running up and down,in and out of burning fencerow. Turned out that's where he hide a jug of Ky sour mash from his wife. Rascal never put any out there after that. Don't ask how I know.

It's amazing to me when doing tractor work in the fields, all kinds of birds come around next to the tractor looking for food in the freshly tilled soil. One would think the sight & sound of large equipment would keep them away.

I had a hawk this spring, caught a snake or something, I stopped the tractor, got my phone out, started recording, and took off, before he flew out from in front of me. Had another that I almost ran over with a front wheel, a dual, and the stalk smasher. He hopped over a row twice before figuring he better take off. Two more rows would have done it but he dropped whatever he caught and flew away.

Quote of the week: THEY'RE SO CUTE CAN I TAKE ONE HOME??? CAN I BE A MOMMY TO A BABY DEER???

Found very small twin fawns while spraying thistles. Boss' daughter was helping and wanted to take them home. Of course when he got back from his farm bureau meeting and I told him about saving him from the deer ranching business, his reply was "kick em in the head and keep going."
