OT, sort of..Bees dying

I saw it mentioned somewhere, possibly on this forum, that someone blamed losses in his bees on them eating pollen from GMO corn. Europe, as I Understand it, allow very little or no GMO crops. My question is, are the Europeans having bee colony collapse problems also?

CCD disorder seems to be world wide according to the documentary i watched on the subject. bees seem fine all summer then when winter hits they eat the pollen and the colony dies....

Neonicotinoid chemical compounds are suspected of causing reductions in bee populations. They can paralyze insects coming in contact with them. They can also cause bees to be more susceptible to mites that make them sick or have CCD in the hive. The problem is still being studied. These compounds are used as common seed treatments and are in widespread use. They have been banned in the UK as I understand. Have not seen anything about GMO crops or pollen causing any reduction in bee populations or having any effect on bees.

Re Neonicotinoid chemical compounds and bees

Do a wider check - looks like this might be research manufactured for an environmental beat-up

Its not just honeybees that are being affected by whatever it is thats killing them off but all bees and wasps.Far fewer wasps nests, bumble bee nest, yellow jackets and hornets than there used to be.We better hope bees/wasps aren't the 'Canary' in the mine.

In several documentary type things I've seen, they just can't find the smoking gun.

Bees are dying in placed bT isn't allowed.

And they are dying in places the neonictoids are not used.

People want to "just do something" to stop the bee problem, but the stuff they are doing isn't supported by any science yet.

Its a mystery.

It is an issue, I have seen people who have had bees for years loose hives too. One thing I have noticed, some people who do not feed their bees seem to loose more than those that do not. I feel very lucky ours made it thru.

Last week a Metro news station had a report of Maple Grove 5th graders being told that bee pop is down due to those nasty farmers destroying the milkweed habitat. Apparently the teachers don"t understand the "weed" part of milkweed.

Whenever someone blames farmers for the loss of habitat, esp. milkweed, I suggest to them to be part of the solution and plow up their lawn and plant it to milkweed....

Isn't that the same thing?

They got their stories mixed up. The lack of milkweed. is what's lowering the Monarch butterfly population.

Ber colonies have been dieing off forever. Not as bad lately as it was a few years ago. The neonic angle is a croc. Some studies have shown the stuff might actually be beneficial since it takes out the mites that plague the beees.

The most common sense answer I've heard is that it's a combination of things. Loss of habitat is among the things listed along with chem use, disease, mites, etc. I don't know. Sometimes I think the experts don't have a clue either.

Got a tree full of bees on the back of the property. Been there a few years now and seem to be doing fine and survived the winter.
Maybe the problem is keeping them in boxes and taking the honey ?

How do you know it's the same bees? Other people have pointed out what you have and a veteran bee keeper opined that it could be that the colony has died off and been replaced several times. Who would know unless they checked the colony regularly?
