Picton Castle

Picton was and still is owned by the largest land owning family in Pembrokeshire County. During the English Civil War the castle was loyal to King Charles but was besieged by the Parliamentarian troops for a short while before surrendering. Only the outer defence walls were destroyed leaving the main tower intact.

the family restored the centre tower and raised the gate house entrance level to the first floor. The original ground floor level became the kitchens and work rooms.

The castle over the next 100's of years was converted into a luxurious home for the family. The outer walls are painted in a "white masonery paint" which I was told was normal practice in medieval times to make the castle stand out and be imposing to the peasants.

The castle & estate is still privately owned by the decendants of the original family. The front half of the castle and the gardens are open to the public,

In the USA we are lucky to have buildings more than 100 years old. There are a few I can
think of that were built in the late 1800's, but just a few. How old are the oldest in
England and other countries?

I was touring Scotland a few years ago and the guide pointed out a ruined castle in a field. She commented that when one king went against another the loser lost his home
(castle) and his life. It was a harsh time.

When our daughter was in Germany as an exchange student, she was shown a single family dwelling that had been in continuous use for over 800 years. That's four times as old as our country.

I imagine that the trees were cut back a long distance from the castle, for firewood and also to eliminate hiding places for an attacking enemy.

I wonder what they did with garbage and human waste?? I suspect sanitation was a low priority back then.

They had a chamber inside the castle next to the living accommodation, sit on the seat and the "waste" fell straight down the outside of the wall -

Castles and houses cold all year round here :(

Heating a castle to-day needs regular visits from fuel distributors' large oil tanker - and an understanding Bank manager

(quoted from post at 02:56:16 06/03/15) Nice cottage, must cost a few Quid to keep it up!

the owners of all castles and stately homes struggle to pay the up-keep & running costs. Most are open to the public and hold events like classic music concerts & weddings etc to raise money.
