OT in Kansas

I am down in SW Kansas this week working on a natural gas (NG) storage facility. They inject the NG into underground caverns in the summer and extract it in the winter. They have large NG engines that run compressors to move the gas around. I am working on automating the water treatment for the coolant to get it at the right pH and conductivity.

Always interesting to here what you are working on. I wonder what is "containing" the gas in the ground? Jim

I'm on the other side of the state, but my sister is a civil engineer who works with natural gas pipelines. She lives in Roswell, N.M., but inspects them from Houston to California.

I have a good friend that works for a pipe line company. They pumped a big cavern full here a few years ago and when they went to empty it there was no gas left. I think it was in Ohio or Indiana. It seems like a risky way to store NG.

They have been doing that a long time here in central Iowa. there is a large natural storage facility near Redfield Iowa. Years ago gas was leaking into a farmers well that lived nearby. The story goes that the well was right beside the house, and when the toilet was flushed the pump motor arced and the explosion blew the side off the house. Anyway Northern Natural Gas co. bought his farm and he moved to another farm. This is supposed to be true.

DavidG,
I think there is an underground storage unit in northern Indiana near the intersection of US30 and 41 close to Griffith, In. Have you been there?

NIPSCO did the underground storage near Royal Center, Indiana back in the 60's. Had a brother in law worked there. I don't know how much it is used today, still have all of the well heads all over the place.
