Manorbier Castle

Wales is renown for its numerous medieval castles which the English built to keep down the native Welsh population.

There was an English Civil War in the mid 1600's. The troops fighting for the Parliament defeated the Royalists who supported King Charles 1st; and Charles was beheaded.

To prevent castles being ever used again, they were partially destroyed, and most are just ruins to-day

All castles are protected as Ancient Monuments, some privately owned, most are owned & managed by the Government and are open to the public

That explains a lot! I have always wondered why only portions of most castles were in ruins, while other portions were more or less intact. They say you learn something every day, so I guess this is my lesson for today. Thanks for the photos and the bit of history.

We toured England a few years ago, have a cousin who is a veterinarian in Central Wales(Camarthen). Explored that castle and many others in Wales, England and Scotland (the Abbey at Iona). A fellow we met at one castle said there wers over 600 castles or ruins thereof in the country. Awesome structures, makes one wonder how in the world did they build such massive edifices by manpower alone!!

Carmarthen is the main town in the County of Carmarthenshire, about 50 miles east of me.
More gently rolling hills than here up on the coast, a big dairy farming area.

We were in Wales in the mid 80's visiting my wife's family in Cwmaman and in Windsor in England. Got to see most of the major sites in southern Wales and SW England, including a couple of days in London. I was fascinated by the Welsh castles, they are literally everywhere. Thanks for the pictures.

Yes, we went on rounds with her one day, one farm milked over 2000 cows. The BandB we stayed at milked several hundred. Beautiful countryside, very friendly people.Goin' back in March 2016.
