I've got a 8'x16' flat rack(wood) on a JD (953?)running gear I've been keeping under cover for years. Someone else might as well own it. What's it worth?
 
4 or 8 ton gear? Tire condition? Locally 4 ton wagons/ gears aren't worth much. I've been paying 500$ for 8 ton gears with bad tires, 750 with good tires, 1000$ for good tires and good flat body. The 12 ton tandems jump way up to 2000$+ for wagon with good flat body.

The cheapest way to get 8 tons gears the last few years has been buying forage wagons, 500$ is common but then you have to get rid of the chuckwagon and all the garbage the owner has tossed in it.
 
if the 953 gear has the cast JD hub caps (early model), it could be worth a bit more than one w/o.
aren't you near geneva? maybe the JD auction at canandaigua would be the best market.
otherwise, i'd say CL at $700-750 and see what happens. its hay season. you can always drop the price.
 
The 953 is rated at 4 ton and the heaviest Deere at that time was the 963 at 5 ton And they were considered the best trailing gear when they were made. Rotunily people are loading them as if they are 8 ton gears. And rough $450 this spring what I was paying for a dealer and on his lot they will be at least $600 and then till they take the rubber off and put on the steel add anouther $320 befor they get to field and that is without a flat bed. Still the most desirable gear out there.
 
Neat to read up on them with a little ytmag search. We don't have the JD gears here, I've never even seen one for sale around here. Most gears here are Canadian manufacturers (Horst, MK Martin, Normand etc) or old 4 ton IH gears for small stuff. There must have been a period of real decline in farms in the 60's here as there seems to be older wooden bolster running gears then a spell of gears built on old truck and car axles.
