Cheat Grass in a Pasture

Due to the last couple of years being so dry and the native grass eaten down fairly hard, I have a fairly
bad case of cheat coming on. This year there has been way more rain than normal, so the grass is coming on
strong too.
I am wondering if I should rotary mow the cheat spots before they go to seed or just let it go and see if
the native grass will take back over.
Any thoughts or experience out there? Thanks in advance - Bob
 
Bob,
You didn't say where you are located, so my comments will be pretty general. However, I'll go ahead and assume you are located in an area where you are receiving less than 20inches of average annual rainfall. Once cheatgrass gets established among native grasses, it is tough to deal with. My best advice would be to graze it fairly heavily before it sets seed (about now in my area here in Utah), but be sure to remove your grazing animals before the native grasses go into the boot stage. Then let the natives set seed and mature without any more grazing that year. Do this for several years and you should see a reduction in cheatgrass and a thickening of the stand of natives. This all assumes that you have other places to go with your animals in summer. Where are you located, by the way? Good luck.
 
I have good luck controlling cheat by harrowing early, it has a very shallow root and very easy to kill when it is young, a heavy chain harrow works well as it flexes and gets more on uneven surfaces, this only works when it is first growing not after it is headed, you can mow it if its headed but if it gets moisture it will grow right back and head very quick, they was working on some sprays for it, really have not heard much either way on how it works in pasture, might check with your local weed and pest they may have other options for your area

I am in Central Ks. Average rainfall is about 28" but I don't think we have had 28" in the last 2-1/2 years. Had about 8 or 9 " in the last month. Bob
