Onan engine problem any ideas

are the contacts clean? gotta be clean -- are the points going back and forth like they should? If the points aint moving the cam gear is stripped of a few of its teeth -- common on an onan -- let us know and we can go from there -- Roy

jocco,It could be that special 2 cyl coil.Get the points closed and with ignition on open them with a screw driver to check spark.Hook an old plug to each of the plug wires and ground the plug base on the engine head ,block and look for spark when the points are opened.

Yes points are moving and has fire but none to the plugs filed them but no help. Engine just has a coil 2 cylinder type.

I think I'd put a test light on the primary side of the coil and see if it flashes when you crank it over, if it does then I'd replace the coil.

What I should have said was what spec,or post full model and serial number. But here are a few items to check. Condensor would be the first. If it has a red cap on it change it. It could be one of the ones Onan had a problem with.If it has the plug wires with the metal shield. Change to automotive style wire. The braids were known to break and cause problems. If it has the plastic coil under the exhaust manifold. Check it for cracks. Don't worry about the cam gear stripping. Doesn't happen on a CCK. Coil's rarely go bad but it can happen.Check it out with new plugs.Let me know what you find. Remember both plugs fire at the same time. The CCK is the one everyone is looking for. The best Onan ever made.At one time there was a six month back order list. Just to get one.
