Wow, That's a lot of rules. Way too many for me. Then a parade too? I was forced to march in way too many of those for them to be fun anymore. But I hope it goes well for you guys and that you have great weather for it. 10MPH? Really?

Rick

Rules say no duals. About the fourth tractor in line has duals on it. Wonder who all gets to bend the rules.

I think the 10mph limit is too slow. A couple friends of mine and my self want to start a tractor ride in northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota and Southeast South Dakota. I am not sure we are going to get it done this year though. I am thinking it would be 60 miles or so. I know it wouldn't be at 10 mph and I would allow duals. I just wonder if there would be enough interest.

What type of tractors do you NOT want to have a speed higher than most older tractors will travel? I assume you do not want any tractors before about mid 60's or even the 70's.

RE: the ten mile-per-hour limit, I don't want to run my 1939 at full speed for that long. It is supposed to be a fun ride not a speed / torture run. Did not say how far the ride was. Just my thoughts. Also they did not rule " no steel wheels" joe

I blew up the picture and it looks to me like that other tire is on opposite side of another tractor parked in left lane.

If we do get our tractor ride organized we are going for 1960 to 1975 tractors since that's what most people collect here and that's what we own. We would probably stick to a maximum speed of 16. I am hoping we can get every thing in order for this ride here.

Anything much more over 10 mph and we leave folks behind. Last year on the last stretch of 12 miles, we bumped to 12 mph and lost about 30 tractors. When we cross busy intersections and need police assistance, motorists and cops ain't too happy when they have to wait for nothing coming due to large gaps. Also, this isn't a race, it's for fun!

Oldtanker: This is nothing compared to neighboring counties and clubs for rules! Most require a valid driver's license AND insurance! Also, it's not a race, it's all for fun!

If I wasn't so far away I would like to check out rural Steele county but i would have to haul the 4020 over there and that would be expensive. Also 10 mph is just too slow. I would probably be a little above idle in 8th gear and that would get old.

We've been doing these rides for almost 10 years and tried faster speeds and some folks always say it'll be too slow. ALOT of old iron in the rides have all they can do to keep up at 10-11 mph and we don't want to discourage these folks from participating. It's supposed to be fun and not an endurance run/race.

I understand that but those old tractors are maxed out and the newer ones are loafing around. If we start one over here its going to be 12mph minimum and 15 or 16 tops. I am looking for only the last 2cylinders up to like 4430s and the equivalent in the other colors. I want to cover miles and see some of the country side. We are thinking about doing a tristate one as we are so close to South Dakota and Iowa and Minnesota. Since you plan this one I have some questions. First off how do you do the food? Secondly is there any special hoops a person has to jump through to start one?

As bradk has emphasized, many old tractors only do about 11 or 12 MPH tops, especially the older 2 cylinder John Deeres and there are many owners of them who like to go on tractor rides.

I am fully aware they hit the minimum and that's why i thought of it like that. 10 is just entirely too slow for any thing newer. That is why I am even thinking of just having ours be 1960 to 1975 with a minimum of 15 mph. Every tractor produced then should be able to do that with ease.

As far as food, being a radio station we "trade" it out for advertising credit to the supplier. In this case, it's Godfather's pizza. Keep in mind, people driving in these don't want a fancy sit-down meal, but something they can walk around with and check out the iron. Registration deadlines a few weeks before the actual cruise help with projected food needed. As far as hoops, we leave from the city limits and need to apply for an event permit which has to be approved by the city. Police assistance is required in the city limits and sheriff assistance in the rural areas. State highway crossing is state patrol at a minimum charge of approx. $300. Liability insurance is through the station as well and our carrier has indicated they won't cover the rides much longer due to risk. Another reason we don't want to speed though the cruise. Just too many things can go wrong with older equipment at around 15 mph.

See a friend and myself are thinking of starting one. I can't see where we would need law enforcement involved as we are more rural than Steele county. I was figuring that each participant is responsible for their own insurance and is doing this at their own risk. My thoughts were to depart from a town so yes a person would need an event license.
