Why do the spark plugs foul up so fast on my 1956 Ford 860? In the winter plowing snow after 1/2 hour I have to change the plugs since they are 100% black, in the summer I can rake hay 3 or 4 days before they start fouling up. I had the engine overhauled a few years ago and that made no difference, put a new carburetor on that didn't help so my mechanic rebuilt the old one that didn't help either. and we adjusted them the best we could. Still have to pull to choke to start it. I put a !88 degree thermostat in instead of a 180 thinking if it run hotter it would help, it didn't. This is the tractor that would start below zero for 40 years if it would turn over 3 times on an old battery.

What kind of plugs are you putting in it? I've had the best luck with Autolite 437. More than once Ive had
a customer complain of there ford not running right and they had Champion plugs in them. Put in a new set
of Autolites and they purred like a kitten. One was a 9n that they had went through the carb and
distributor and still run rough. They brought it to me and I put plugs in it and that was it. Seen the guy
a couple years later and he said it was still running great. Might be an easy thing to try

maybe try a higher heat plug and the air restriction is a good one; Most of the older tractors had n oil bath filter and if too full will limit air flow

I agree check the the air cleaner. Might have to take it off and wash out the screen in side it. The autolite 437 is a hotter plug. Throw your champion plugs away and get
a set of the autolite's

REMOVE the air cleaner and thoroughly clean it.

I have seen down tubes nearly closed off with accumulated oil impregnated dust.

#1 champs now days are junk and so are auto lite any more. You need a hotter plug. I have switched to the NGK plug that is equal to the auto lite 437s. The champ H10s are way to cold a plug in it

Yes I have cleaned the air cleaner. Next trip to town I will get some Autolite 437s, but one of the other plugs I have tried is the NGK B-6L that didn't help.
