JD LX188 Trouble

Hello all! Lawnmower is giving me trouble. 17hp Kawasaki liquid. Starts and runs great, but after an hour or more of mowing, it starts to cut out and lose power. It seems a quick choke will kinda bring it back, sorta. Don't think it's fuel-related, though. There is no vacuum in the gas tank, and the tank is absolutely spotless with no water. I've had the carb apart and it was all pretty and clean. Clean fuel filter, too. If it was a gas supply issue, you'd think it would take less than an hour to start acting up. But, could the fuel pump be getting weak?

I tried pulling the coil wires one at time when it was running bad to see if it was a spark issue, but it wasn't clear to me if one or the other was the culprit. I suspected one or both coil packs starts quitting when it gets hot enough. They're kind of expensive and I don't just want to throw parts at it. And, the quick choke thing seems to work, but it can't mow until I go park it and let it sit for a couple hours.

I kinda lean towards the fuel pump, but is there a common electrical issue when hot on these? Thank you for any clues.

Sounds like a coil going bad to me. They will do that when they get hot. Many times running with the choke on will help too.

Even if the fuel pump is okay you might want to replace it. When the original goes bad a drain hole leaks gas right onto the muffler. Newer ones had a short line that drains to the ground.

Wish I could help with the mower, but I don't know much about them. What I am wondering is, I believe we corresponded briefly a couple of years back about a W-4 International my dad wanted to sell, and a neighbor ended up buying it. Well, he came down with health trouble, and I ended up buying it back just to help him out. I'd like to sell, and figured I'd offer it to you first. If you have any interest, let me know and I'll give you more info. The motor is needing assembly due to a bad crankshaft, but I believe all needed parts have been purchased and it is ready for reassembly. Tires and sheet metal are good. I'd like $600 for everything. I'm pretty sure it would part out for more, but I hate to do that if someone can use it. Email should be open, or can respond via YT forum.

I had one of those for 9 yrs...i'd shine up the flywheel magnets and the backsides of the coils....put a set of hot autolites in it(NOT CHUMPION'S) if it still has kitten's, coils b thy problem. excellent lawn tractor, x485 is the replacement for the 188 I had....last one i'll ever have to buy. my two pennies, use as you wish.

If you haven't replaced the plugs, just do it to say you did! Had exactly the same symptoms with a Kawasaki motor on a JD push mower. After wasting $60 on parts and hours of needless guessing, a new plug fixed it!

I just went thru similar issue with Kohler, and after amonth, and hundreds of dollars replacing/fixing things, I discovered when I was reinstalling things I was pinching down the fuel line running from the pump to the carb. Re-routed it, all fixed!

Dad has a LX188 he bought new in 98. It's kinda funny as we were talking about his Friday afternoon.

When his was roughly a year old, it went in and the coils were replaced, hotter plugs installed, and the carb was jetted differently.

If we both recall correctly, it would cut out and run on one cylinder from time to time, usually after it had been running for a while.. (it's been a long long time). Dad said it was covered under warranty, but if he remembers correctly, he was told it was a service bulletin back then.. I just recall it going in to be fixed, because I remember loading it on the trailer and taking it to our local dealer for him.

Hope this helps,
Brad

Flywheel magnets and coils?
It's a 12v ignition system, not a magneto. As long as there is not some barrier between the flywheel and the inductive pickups. They will run
There is an ignition module in behind the starter. They on occasion fail.
