Periodic Non Start on Ford f250

2004 Ford F250 V8 4W - Problems periodically with it not starting - can go a couple of weeks or months and then the truck will not start, wait an hour or two and go back and it starts right up. Doesnt matter if it has rained, if it is cold or hot out, if it was driven a few minutes before or a couple of days before. Two dealerships can not find any issues. Any thoughts? Appreciate it.

Our Subaru has a random no crank situation which is related to the neutral safety switch. If I poke the (auto trans) shift lever further up into park it will crank. I'm not clear from
your question if it will or will not crank.

My F250 is much older, but I had the same problem with it years ago. Eventually I found one of the wires for the emissions garbage was, at times,
shorting out against the right valve cover where it couldn't be seen. Took me a long time to find the problem.

Is this not cranking, or cranks and no start? Next time it does it pay attention to the lights on the instrument cluster, if they come on, mainly the check engine light. Also if it cranks and doesn't start see if the check engine light is on but if it goes out when its cranking. Another thing to look/listen for is if you can hear the fuel pump come on for a couple secs when you turn the key to run.

I've had a similar problem and it turned out to be the electronic distributor/ignition ... Ford came out in the past few year and said that their ele. ignition was not any good. try another brain box and Dis pickup

None of the 99+ super duty trucks used distributor ignitions it was all coil on plug ignition, and really all ford trucks since 97+ were without distributors.

My Ford expedition was doing that and it turned out to be the battery/starter cables, had corrosion in the ends I think.

She cranks over - just wont fire, as if fuel pump died or fuel filter was clogged. But once starts will run just fine, doesnt die out, at least has not done so yet. Happened again last night, would not fire up, and this morning, turned over and fired up just fine.

Thought the same thing with the gear selector - moved it back and forth to reset any control switch - was not of any help. Thanks for the suggestion.

Generally the safety switches prevent the starter from getting power since you don't want the engine turning over with the vehicle in gear even if it doesn't actually start and run.

I have a 2004 F150 with the 5.4 gas.
There's a upgrade on the fuel pump control which is on the cross member above the spare tire.
The old style which lays on the frame badly corrodes to the point of falling apart.
The new ones have stand-offs that prevent it touching the frame.
You may want to check it's condition.

Does it even try to fire up for a second or so-if so I would suspect fuel pump not running.I would find the location of the collision switch(info in owner's manual)and check it real careful. Also find the fuel pump relay. The next time it acts up, swap relay with another from same fuse box. Also whhap the bottom of fuel tank with a rubber mallet;sometimes that will jar the pump to work.Mark

The fuel pump relay is part of and internal to the inside fuse block. Just so you know and don't tear your hair out looking. It is not
replaceable outside of replacing the whole fuse block. I have seen them fail.

If you value your time, your wallet and sanity, spend fifty dollars for a scan tool that can be used on most anything built in the last 15 years. Better still do as I have and spend two or three hundred for a dash mounted scan with real time readings. It's intertaining to peck and pull on things if it's a 65 year old tractor but that stuff doesn't work on modern cars and trucks. I don't understand why the dealers didn't tell you what was going on unless they didn't even hook it up. I hope you didn't give them money for nothing in return.

Ok, I said it earlier but see if the check engine comes on with the key turned to on/run. If it does then see if the light goes out when you are cranking it.
