Trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan

Went to the western UP of Michigan last week, to the Keweenaw peninsula. About a 9-10 hour drive from lower Michigan. Had a great time at a wedding Sat night. Stayed with a buddy and his wife in Eagle River and saw an old International TD series close to the shore of Lake Superior. Which one is it? I'm thinking maybe a TD6. The grass was too wet to get too close to it. The first falls is Eagle River falls, many Redhorse Suckers in the river below trying to get upstream. The snow gauge is impressive and the sign with the record snowfall is too. Had to include a pic of a left over snowbank still on the ground up there. The pic off the dock is from another buddys camp on Lac La Belle near the tip of the Keweenaw. The second little falls is Jacob Falls like the sign says, there are soo many picturesque things to look at. They also have Pastys up there and we had the great pasty wars of 2015 to see who had the best one. On Mothers day we went to Copper Harbor to the golf course and had a prime rib buffet in the old heavy timbered clubhouse built in the '30's. On the way home just after turning onto US 2 from Blaney Park we had a cougar run in front of us about 50'. It was as long (without tail) as my car is wide. A beautiful powerful animal. Overall a great trip. BTW, on that dozer, I'm gonna have my buddy throw a tin can over the exhaust.

I plan to take the Motorhome to the UP some day early spring or fall (less school kids). We do a lot of dry boondock camping at Natl Forest or BLM or Army Corps Engineers etc. type of campgrounds, its very affordable.

John,

Sure looks like it is a 9 series crawler rather than a 6 by the second roller on the top side of the track but as far as a T model or a TD it is very hard to tell from the pictures. The exhaust looks like it is on the left side which would make it a T model (gas) but the side of the engine looks like a TD model with the fuel filters and linkages. A little more telephoto on your lens and we would have had it nailed. Great pictures. The mines up there are also very impressive.

It's a diesel, if you zoom in or look closely on the 2nd and 3rd pictures, you can easily see the injector pump and fuel filters on the side of the engine.

The previous owner of this dozer is deceased and his daughter now owns it. My friend said it started on gas and switched over to diesel. I forgot to add that.

Let me know next time and I'll pay you to bring me something back! Been looking for a swather and I only seem to find any in Minnesota. Not really sure I want it bad enough to drive 10 hours one way to pick it up. :)

I'm going to have to go up there sometime, been to Mackinaw Island twice, spent a week at a cabin at Eagle River Wi. about 40 yrs, ago and wandered up to Watersmeet Mi. from there.

When the kids were young and at home we always took our vacations up there and all over the 'UP". Never wanted to come back down home. (until winter of course). The iron and copper industry and history up there is next to none. Tour the open pit mines at Ishpeming/Negawnee and all the waterfalls north of Ironwood.

Haven't been up there in a few years. Hoping to take a week off in the next couple of years and grab my camping gear, fishing poles and fly rod, and ride across the UP on forest roads, fishing as I go. Got a buddy that wants to do the same when I go. Buddy of mine that lives a bit south of me has family that lives in Ontonagon, where he hails from. He has 2 McCormick T20's up there that he said were mine if I wanted to haul them home. Now I just have to find the time and a bigger trailer to haul both at the same time. He
guesses they go 8500 lbs each. Maybe someday...
Nice pictures, glad you had a good time

UP is a great place to just wander--something to see around every corner. Bond Falls is beautiful, and I've always wanted to see the Cornish Engine at Iron Mountain. There's just something about a 40 foot diameter flywheel.

Hi johnlobb, thanks for posting the pics brings back fond memories of when I did lots of work in the UP for Mead Paper Co. got to see most of it from the air, after I retired we went back a couple of time to really enjoy the area, we really like the Great Lakes Ship Wreck museum at White Fish point.
