The cost of bison meat 2

Thanks Bison for the price charts. To be honest i didnt realize the industry was as big as it is. Thank you to everyone for the good words. I got busy in the field and couldn't reply till now. 17 hours in the saddle yesterday but i got a lot done.

The bison industry is just a drop in the bucket compared to beef but the demand for bison meat is there.

We just need more producers!

They've gone bankrupt a couple times in the past few years. It appears they are
currently operating under the name TenderBison.

Moresmoke, thank you. My 92 year old step mom grew up between Fessenden and New Rockford. She and my dad were making regular trips from here in NW Iowa to New Rockford when her parents were ailing and that was about the time they were setting up a bison slaughter co-op in New Rockford.

I would love to raise cattle for meat someday... My dad had a small farm with Beefalo. [b:73c1f4c1ba]Maybe I should consider Bison?[/b:73c1f4c1ba] I have no idea how they compare to beef cows...
ou wont regret it but i would keep them pure, do not contaminate them with breeding to beef.
Bison requires far less work than beef, the cost of keeping them is also a lot lower.
The only feed they need is grass and hay and salt/minerals.

but the cost of fencing is a little higher for pure bison. We have beefalo, they taste great, and so far have been very good to work with. Even the ones with a bit more bison in them.

I lived right in that area for a few years, place previously owned by Edinger family. Now have moved about 100 mi east.

etter fencing (page wire)is peace of mind for many years to come.
Barb wire gives problems from day one...even with plain cattle.

Well at least you don't have to mix the meat while you make it into sausage ;)

Pure bison is twice as good eating and half the work to raise them

:)

Why don't ranchers grow more bison instead of beef? Beef cattle sometimes don't make it in harsh winters, wouldn't be a problem for bison.

I agree on barb wire, don't use it at all, however we live on a busy highway, fence is 2 runs of horse rail on the
outside, 5 strands of high tension electrified on the inside, and we are going to add some 4' high mesh type wire on
the outside to prevent the calves from crawling under and getting out. We have some neighbors who just got out of
raising bison, their fence was 4" Steel pipe, cables, high tension electric, with guard rails on it to keep them in, I
can't afford that kind of fence. I agree pure bison is better, just can not afford to build fence like that. We have
found that the ones that have bison markers taste better.
