Hi,

Does anyone know anything about these engines ? I have tried to look up some infor about the history of these engines but I find extremely little. The only thing I found was that the 270 engine were prone to crank failure if overreved. I did not find out if all three engines belong to the same family, but sort got an impression that the 270 had the same bore and stroke as the L4, and some feeling that the 270 was kind of a modernized L4.
The reason for the crank issue I guess was that the 270 has only 3 main Bearings from what I understood.

I will be greatful for any help and or links to some info.

Try the Massey-Ferguson forum. MF used Perkins diesel engines in their tractors.

Thank you for your answer. I have posted it there now, the reason I posted it here is that I am not so sure the 270 and 300 engines were used in any Massey Ferguson, but the 318 was. And I have read somewhere that the 270 was used in an IH tractor, and the L4 was used in a Ford of some kind way back in the old days when I was not even in diapers yet.
So, I thought I might hit a wider population with knowledge in here.

The 270D engine is the same block etc as the L4. The combustion chamber and injection system is different on the 270D. Both perform quite well, but owners will tell you that the L4 is much harder to start in cold weather. (its true, I have one in a tractor)
They are good engines, but can break a crankshaft if over revved WITH NO LOAD. Otherwise they will provide very good service. Both engines have been well used inmany industries.

A4.300 was used in MF Super 90 tractor and 410 combine, had 5 main bearings like the 318. Bore was the same but 300s I've had used chrome plated sleeves while the 318 used cast iron. 318 sleeves can be used in the 300 block if it has been bored as the OD is larger on the 318. 300 had 4.75 stroke while 318 is 5 inches..

The L-4 was used in the Golden Eagle Cockshutt and only in 1958 model 560 Cockshutt tractors. The 270 was used after that by Cockshutt. That is the only application for those 2 engines in North America. More questions?

I see.

So, is it safe to say that the 300 and the 318 is the same engine family, and maybe a bit more modern than the 270 ? And that the 270 is not the same family than the 300/318, but the same family as the L4 ?
