How to Negotiate New Tractor Price

What's the best way to negotiate a new tractor purchase in the $10-20k range without being sleezy? Multiple dealers in the area offer the identical model.

How can I figure out what their invoice is?

I wouldn't say we are not sleezy anymore that the a salesman being a rip off. But you have to know what you can afford and don't look at something you can't even come close to. Those small tractors are still selling good. You will be lucky to get 2K off of their first price. We just bought this last year for $12K and they didn't deal at all. Even the compact tractors are holding there price. I haven't seen anything new 20-30hp loaders for much less that 25-30K. Will be good to hear from others. Good luck.

I only ask once, what's your best cash,no trade price? If they're serious about selling something, they'll give you their best deal the first time. If they shoot another lower price at you while you're walking toward the door, well, you just got a better price.

Go to the "Buying/Pricing forums on Tractorbynet.com.

Great pricing resource for CUTs and SCUTs.

Do not expect to discover invoice (whatever that means) but you will likely learn what others have paid.

Deals are out there if you are not set on a specific brand. Best friend bought a new Kubota L3200 with FEL, 5 foot hog, 5 foot box blade and 18 foot trailer package for $24K last Nov.

Tractor with FEL only was $17K and change

I bought a new John Deere last yuear, retail was $38,000, I stuck to my offer of $25,000 and got the new 2014 john deere FOR MY firm OFFER, the dealer had to order it, It was not a new old stock but new from mother deere.

You probably won't figure out what their cost is... unless by chance. I stumbled into that yesterday with an item I was ordering for the fire dept.... but that's not a frequent thing.
The way I look at it, price discovery is a chore for some people and a blood sport for others. For most sales people, especially on commission... it's a blood sport to see what they can get from you. The older I get the more I enjoy the sport of it...
Call them all and see what they want or visit them... then call far away and see what you can get it for... and if you can get a better deal and you don't think you need a local dealer... go get it. Or use it to bring someone local into line. lol

Identical model is the key. There can be a huge difference in tractor prices just on tires alone plus several other options. You would have to compare equipment unless it is just a plain Jane lawn mower or something in that order. I recall two times, the same person, several years apart. First time came into boss's office and offered x amount of dollars on a trade for new tractor. Boss told me about this much later. Anyway, boss looks at his figures for a while and looking kind of reluctantly, says, ok, deal. He would have offered to sell for less as he knew his invoice. Few years later, boss's son now boss. Same guy comes in, this time gets a price on 806 diesel. Goes 12 miles to neighboring dealer and get tractor for less. Problem was, the 806 we had was with a three point hitch and the one he bought was reg drawbar. He paid more each time for actual equipment. We also had a customer price a tractor, this was a 3688, and then went to another dealer and told that dealer the incorrect price quote from us. That didn't set to well with us or the other dealer when all was said and done.

First off get over being worried about what the salesman thinks about you. What do you care what he thinks? There is no hurry on your part time is on your side they have plenty of tractors to sell and won't run out.Figure on going in and dealing several times.Saving
a thousand might not sound like much on the price of a new tractor but a 1000 is good pay for a little time and effort.

One more you might come across is "MMM" = middle mount mower for a belly mower on some of the subcompact tractors.
