OT - 2,4-D Haying vs Grazing Wait Time Question

Looking at the application guidelines for applying 2,4-D Amine, it says wait 7 days before grazing, but wait 30 before haying.

Just curious to the reason for this. Same animal could graze in 7 days, but would have to wait for 30 days to eat a bale of hay.

Thanks,
Bill

Animals will eat around the poisioned weeds when grazing but baling rolls everything together, after 30 days all the poision weeds should be pretty much disintegrated.

Think about it. At 7 days how much grass will an animal eat? Even if the grass is a "little toxic" it will only be for another a week or two before it gradually fades away completely. At 14 days it is much less than it was at 7 days.

If you mowed it at 7 days the level of toxicity stays the same - an animal eating hay from the field cut at 7 days for the entire winter is going to get the chemicals that exists in the grass at 7 days for 3 or 4 months. That's a long time to be exposed to a "questionable" level of toxicity.
