22LR shells

Was going to town today so I called Academy sporting goods to see if they have any 22LR in stock.
Guy says sure do.

Guess that was my first mistake.
Should have been more specific with my question.

Get to the store and the counter guy points at about 25; 50 round boxes sitting on the shelf.
That's your biggest box?
Yes that's our only boxes.
OK I'll take 4 boxes.
Sorry limit of 2 boxes.
OK I'll take 2 boxes.

He hands me 2 boxes and it was a good thing I looked before buying them.
Lead is so small it barely sticks out of the shell casing.

So now I am full of questions. Find out........
They have no gunpowder.
Will not cycle the action of semi automatic rifle.
They have a muzzle energy of 11 ft. lbs. and muzzle velocity of 500 fps.

NO GUNPOWDER!!!!!!
What the heck good is a bullet with no gunpowder?
And with muzzle power like that I think my 177 pellet gun would do a better job.

I know 22LR has been hard to find; but is this what we have come to in this country.
Rifle shells without gunpowder.

Were they Aguila Colibri rounds? These are primer-only with no gunpowder. They work great for dispatching pigeons in buildings since they will not penetrate the roof tin. Just don't use them in a rifle with a tight barrel - they'll stall out before getting to the muzzle. My 80-year old Remington rolling block is the only gun I have that I can use them in.

I was at the Cabela's in Wichita, KS just the other day and they had a fairly good selection of 22LR in CCI, Federal, and Remington brands with both box and brick package sizes.

sounds like super colibri. pest control use- converts your firearm into a "pellet" gun. 20 gr bullet will retain its energy pretty well. works good on pigeons. took a number of them out of a barn once.

Sounds like bird shot, they are for eliminating birds inside a building without causing much damage.

For several years, some people have been hoarding every .22 rounds they can find. I'm told they believe .22 shells will be the only currency after the Apocalypse?

They're made to shoot in town so people dont hear you or report you they have a name but I can't think of it all I could find name wise was cap rounds they just fire off the primer

I think they are called low velocity, or something like that.

Actually, I think they are referred to as "subsonic".

My son Got 2 cases of bricks of CCI and 3 buckets (1400 count)of Remington golden bullets in Anchorage Alaska. Ive not seen that around here.

I keep a couple of boxes of the primer only 22's in the shop for small varmints They are pretty good out to around 15 yards and make almost no noise in the old bolt action I keep out in the shop. They are a little louder in the the old High Standard pistol. I haven't check on the availability of 22 LR lately as I have close to 5000 rds most of it was bought before the shortage and at reasonable prices. I just can't make myself pay what they want for it now. I haven't been able to find any 17 HMR lately but I have a couple of hundred rounds so I really don't need any more.

I had some of those. Great for shooting mice and birds in the barn. If you're having a hard time finding ammo, check out slickguns.com

Those wimpy 22's are AWESOME plinkers in a 22 revolver... Cheap, quiet, ZERO recoil (imagine that). Just kind of for fun though...

Not sure why you are having trouble getting them. Mom and granny went to CDA the other day, and they had a limit of one HALF BRICK (500) per person, so they bought 1000 rounds.. THAT should keep me busy for a while!!! :)

The really small ones are BB Caps. Actually have a round lead BB in them. Primmer only and they POP. They have a very short case even shorter than a 22 short. The next up are still primmer only and have a very short brass case also but have a cone shape bullet. They are CB caps. Then you have short, long, and LR long rifle, and if you want to get technical there is WRF. That is winchester Rim Fire and has a very long case. One day it got a litle bigger in size and became the 22 magnum. The name you are looking for is "Sub sonic" ammo. Doesn't make the sonic "Crack" and is also used in guns with silencers. Those CB caps will drop like 6 inches at only 50 feet! Very low power but fun if you know how to use them. Almost like throwing a hand gernade..not much distance.

I went by Bass Pro Shop a couple days ago and they didn't have any. Then I was a Walmart anyway and asked and the lady said she didn't remember the last time they had any. I could buy pistol, rifle and shotgun ammo but no 22.

Oh shoot is it really??? Not sure why I thought a brick was 1000??

Well then, I guess they bought 2 bricks!!

Thanks for the correction! Bryce

I never heard of this kind of ammo either. I can say that nailing birds with a paintball gun is fun, but messy indoors.

Actually the first 22 RF were primer only. We have come full circle.

I like to have a stock of different ammo for different jobs. Our cemetery had/has a gopher problem. I was asked to get rid of some as quietly as possible. My daughter and I would take her NEF .22 single shot down there and out to 25 yards or so this setup was effective at anchoring the little buggers. The hammer dropping on the rifle made more noise than the 'muzzle blast".

I have always kept an eye out for deals and buy many consumables this way. It is nice to be setting on a stash when others are in panic mode. I do on occasion share with others too. :)

I have bought those Colibri 22 primer only shells for years. Made in Mexico. I have shot them out of a bolt action 22 rifle with a 20" barrel. But, my favorite rifle to use is a Model 72 lever action rolling block single shot with a 20" barrel made by Stevens. I have never had a problem. I also used to shoot them out of a Beretta 92 with a conversion unit inside my apartment when I was on a mining job. No, they will not cycle a semi auto. They sure are fun to use on pests. By the way, Colibri means Hummingbird.
