brush hogging

What would be a good rate to charge an hour to brush hog for people I was thinking around 40? I live in north central ohio

I use to do that for a while. I used a Farmall H or Ford 9N with a 5 foot brush hog. I charged between 50 and 75 and hour. You have to figure if one thing breaks its all on you to cover costs. Wear and tear is a huge factor.

I usually charge 65 an hour using my deutz 6206 with an 8 foot mower....or if they really want some grass cut I'll I use my white 185 field boss with a 18 foot batwing and charge 100 an hour.

I used to charge $50 an hour with this size tractor and 6' mower, moved up to an 8' and now charge $75 an hour. I'm about half the price per acre as my competition.

How can they be competition?

You have to consider insurance, fuel, Each town I mow in requires a city license. Think if you ruin a rear tire. There goes any profit. when all that is Taken out uncle sam gets his share. I would think around 75.00 is a better figure. No one around here wants to pay by the hour, most want a price up front. I usually make out better that way, sometimes I don't, that doesn't much any more. Stan

Who wants to operate a rotary cutter in the spring? The fields are full of young birds, rabbits and deer that can not escape in time before being cut to bits.

I mow for a few widow women around here and charge by the acre , if it is a pasture I haven't ever been in I use a loader tractor with the bucket on the ground . 20 an acre at 5 or more acres an hour ain't to bad here

(quoted from post at 03:25:40 04/27/15) That's a beautiful mower Eldon.
What would something like that set you back?
Good looking tractor too. What model? How many HP?
Thanks.

I shopped around and wound up ordering this one for around $6500 4 years ago. I put about 300 hours on it a year, and no problems yet. Deere dealer wanted $7500 for a Bush Hog, $7000 for the Deere brand (said the Bush Hog was better). I had a Deere MX8 already and was not satisfied with the cut. The Deere deck was built a little better with double walls, but I had a problem keeping one of the stump jumpers on! Tractor is an Allis 175D, 65 pto HP,efficient Perkins diesel that rarely uses over 2 gallon per hour.

(quoted from post at 05:28:36 04/27/15) Whatever the job, I charge by the job, never hourly.
I don't want any 'boss' watching over me constantly.

I've never had a customer accuse me of mowing too slow or milking a job....most are amazed at what my outfit will cut in an hour. I'm very clear with them that if I find rocks or obstacles it will slow me down. I advertise that I will beat any written quote by 20%, only time that happened I made more than what I would have charged them anyway

I live in north central Ohio too. I bush hog for friends, and just take what they give (a neighbor thing). Mostly its just so I can drive my tractor and enjoy hearing it work. If I was gonna charge it would be at least $40 an hour depending on what kind of field it was. A new overgrown field would be more than one I had cut before (and knew what was in the field to look out for).

That is the reason we quit going after bush hogging work invariably We would loose at least 1 rear tire.

Thanks everyone I will do that after I get a couple jobs because currently I don't know how long it would take I will be using a case 541 with a 5ft bush hog squealer

Central Alabama most 5' - 6' mowers seem to be around $50/hour with a 2 hour minimum which is what I charge. Batwings go $75 and up with a 4 hour minimum. Unless you have cut the area before or have lots of experience by the job pricing may be difficult.
