neighbor to the south farm called ask if he could spread several loads of horse manure on my fields for free, I said no thank you, who he was putting it on said no more.your not going to start here I don't want your weed seed and pine chips spread on my land.I told him your horse manure will cause more problems than what it is worth in spray and nitrogen to desolve the pine chips. he got mad cussed a few times and hung up the phone. there is no such thing as free!

I sell mine to home gardeners. I make a big pile and let it compost for a year and put it on craig's list for free if they load it them selves. If I load their truck for them I charge $10.00 and give them all they want.

The past 2 years, my neighbor uses my backhoe to load his horse poo then delivers it 25 miles to my another place I have, an old gravel pit. 8 14k dump trailer loads. We let it age, use last years in the garden. Use it to make flower beds in gravel pit. No problem. Boss is glad it get it. I bought 3 ton of AG lime this year to mix in. Also add leafs in fall, grass clipings, any other organic material. It also has hay and saw dust mixed in. I don't see any problems. Glad to get it for FREE. Tell your neighbor to bring it to me.

I would take it also. Compost it one year to kill off the weed seeds. I have lots of places I can improve drainage and such. Organic matter is better than sand for that.

I have a neighbor that does that. It's a nightmare. Talk about introducing weeds. Initially he had one horse. I said OK fine, put it at the edge of the field. Then he got more horses and continued to pile it at the edge of that field. I was so excited to get a header full of it at harvest after I told him no more.

Two weeks ago I went up there and spent half a day loading it into the spreader with the skid steer and running it to the other side of the field with the manure spreader. I was afraid if I didn't help him with that pile it would show up in my field again. He actually paid me this time so I can't complain too much. Except for the chemical bill to kill all of the weeds that will grow in those beans this year. Grrrrr. That top ground is poor as it is and only grows a decent crop and great weeds. Now it is mostly weeds.

I think that anyone who thinks that horse manure is loaded with seeds has never done a spring seeding. That will show you that you already have plenty of weed seeds without any horse manure. I have always passed on horse manure myself, but it can be a big help in building up tilth in sandy soil. Sure you need to add lime but whatever you are growing will do a lot better with some moisture holding capacity in the ground.

You chose wisely, horse manure must compost before being applied.

I tried it one year, took me two years after that to finally kill the weeds off.

FUNNY All I have on my fields is horse manure but then that is all I have other then goats and if you cut your hay at the right time you have no weed problems. But then when some one says there hay has no weeds I tell then that they lie big time

You could pile it for a year or two then spread composted on the fields. That should eliminate the weeds. I wish I had someone near me wanting to haul it to me free of charge.

Yup, don't just spread it. Got to let it compost. The barn where we keep our horse has about 60 stabled. You can imagine how big the manure pile gets.

It gets turned and worked as more is added then a local landscape company will drop off a 25 yd dumpster in late summer. Barn workers will spend a half-hour loading it and next day the landscaper comes and swap an empty one. People also stop by with pickups and even cars with pails in the trunk and get a bunch for free.

Poultry farmers around here are required to let manure compost for a certain amount of time before they can sell it to spread on farmland.I get Turkey litter and compost it in a U shape framework bordered by old round bales works like a charm as I mix old hay and
some wood chips with it.No big deal having a manure pile on a farm that I can see.Manure is a real asset if handled in a sensible manner.

I would. All day long. Composted manure is THE best soil-building material there is hands down. But then, perhaps I'm not much of a "self respecting farmer". :)

Me too. My mom rented the land out while I was still in the army and it got abused. I'm working on getting it built back up. I'll take all the manure anyone wants to give me especially if it's delivered for free!

Manure is a by-product. Some hog producers are paying local farmers to inject manure on nearby farms to avoid hauling it long distances. Salt buildup can be a concern on poorer drained soils. Hog manure seems to have fewer weed seeds compared to the manure and bedding from beef and dairy operations. Maybe the finer grinding that destroys more weed seeds.
