Hey Michigan guys (or close)...swather search

I have a couple of projects I want to play at that will require an older swather with a draper head. No cab or frills. No big price tags. I hit a couple of equipment yards this week in the thumb but no luck. Tractorhouse...all too far. If you think of it, when you are running for parts this Spring, could you look in the used equipment at your usual places and let me know if you see anything? Maybe watch the local auctions and give me a heads up so I can attend? Appreciated!

Ginops in Alanson has a John Deere sitting on their lot that I have seen driving by. Their website lists it as an 800 for $3200.00. I get by their once every couple weeks or so, but really don't know anything about them anyway. I could stop and take a peak at it, but as far as being knowledgeable about them, that wouldn't be me!

I think I saw that listed somewhere. Honestly, the other 800's I see listed at dealers are $1500-2000, so I am not jumping all over that one. And then there is the matter of the color, and if it is going to make that funny popping sound...

Just kidding...if it works and is affordable I don't care what color it is.

A jd 800 may be the worst swather made. They certainly are the hardest to work on, and they don't cut great either. That price is way out of line. How far do you want yo drive? There are a few around here, and more in west and nw Mn and in tge dakota's.

I agree with the price and this isn't another one of those cases where I need it tomorrow thank heaven. What I am running into is this. If I could drive across Lake Michigan I can find a bunch of them. If I want to buy the special anti terrorist license, I can cross a couple hundred miles into Canada and get one. I don't have to tell you, it is driving AROUND the lake thru Chicago in a 1976 3/4 ton with no air or radio or cruise and pulling a trailer that makes this kind of unappealing. Customs and import duties don't thrill me either. Lots of them in the plains too. Michigan, Ohio and Indiana are a little dry.

I am on the other side of the lake and that Chicago thing does not thrill me either. I have seen things on Craigslist in MI and IN that I could use but that trip thru Chicago kept me from calling.

Since when is there a duty importing used farm equipment?

Every time the subject of importing a tractor comes up, it's "no problem, just have good receipts as proof of ownership."

I couldn't tell you either way. I just know that I used to be involved with a client who shipped cars to Canada annually for GM and then shipped them back after the car shows were done. They came back after us for import duties on the value of several trailer loads of expensive cars. I had a bit of a battle on my hands and was, honestly, a little out of my depth. I did back them off though.

How about through the UP, and across WI on US 8? But that might be even longer. I don't know where you are in MI.

if the one at ginop's is what you're looking for, don't worry about the asking price. just give them a reasonable offer and your phone number. they will most likely call back. I have experience with them.

Dave,
The laws must be different now. I ship vehicles into Canada every year. Sign a few forms when they leave and when they come back, no issues.
