How many of you have lost a wheel or axle???

Yes that wonderful misgiving: How many of you have had it happen and what was the cause and outcome??? Maybe a set of dualls off your road tractor, late getting home because the car lost a wheel (axle and all). How about the tractor in the manure pit with rear off??? Or the famous broken studs on your trailer= wheel in the ditch!!!!

Twice for me, both when I was very young. First was when the left front wheel of my 67 firebird passed me on the way home from school. It just came loose and the stds broke. The front of the car dropped a bit and then the wheel passsed me and went out into the swamp. Took a bit for me and my friends to figure out whose tire it was. Lol. Second was the rear wheel and axle of my f250 a couple years later. I was on my way home from town with a load of lumber in the back and the wheel bearings went out on the driver's side as I was going around a corner. The whole wheel and axle came out until the just the end stuck in the axle housing.

Dad had the axle break on the rear of the IHC 300 while harrowing. They were known for crystallizing, fairly common... Broke so close he had to do the repair out in the field. And straighten the pto lever the wheel came in on.

Few years later the other side broke cultivating. There was enough stub left he could get a wheel clamp on it, and limp it back to the yard to get the front mount cultivator off and do the repair in the shed. The Torq lever was pulled back and held the tire off of him, with no fenders there wasn't much keeping the wheels off of the driver.

Now that I think about it, I spent many many many hours standing on that wheel axle, holding onto the headlight, the seat, or dads pants leg, as I rode along to pick rocks.

Hum.

That coulda been bad.

ush hoggin, axle nut came off, wheel, hub all fell off, tractor list to port side. Jacked it up, put all back on and kept on hoggin.

Had a Toyota truck break a ball joint and leave me on the side of the road. Also had one front steel wheel fall off my 1935 JD-B due to the wrong nut holding it on. Also had that happen to my S88 Oliver. Almost lost a set of duels on a 1965 Ford 1 ton but noticed it before they came all the way off

broke a spindle hauling a junk truck out of the woods with the minnie. chained the axle to the loader and drove out on one wheel.

Years ago I had a set of duals on a ton come loose. Broke several studs. I noticed the vibration and caught it before they flew the coup. Cause... wheels were not tightened properly by the tire shop that had recently installed new tires.
Next incident I had a tractor break it's axle retaining bolt and the shaft walked it's way out of the carrier. That was a bit of an interesting experience trying to get stopped on a 15% grade at 20 mph with 5 ton behind me... then hauling it home (carrying) with another tractor, by it's own drawbar because it was now on three wheels. Cause was likely that I had over tightened the axle bolt some time previous when I'd changed the brakes and wheel seal.
Worst scare I ever had was a set of duals coming loose on the tandem. I caught that in the mirror (could see them wobbling) as I was coming to a stop sign before turning onto a fairly major highway. Lucked out that time and jacked it up and got the nuts tight enough to get it home... but it ruined the two aluminum wheels as the holes were wallowed out. I was just lucky it didn't ruin the pilots on the wheels or hub. That was an expensive lesson in buying two new wheels AND the 3/4" torque wrench I should have bought a week before.

Had a lady bring by her mid '60s Chevrolet one morning, said it was making a noise when she drove it. I took it for a test drive, "Yes that sounds like a loose"...

About that time the left rear wheel folded up under the fender well. I was only going about 10 MPH, so it didn't hurt anything other than the threads on the studs. I got it back on, took nuts off the other wheels to get it back to the shop. Found they were loose too!

She suspected vandalism, probably so, she was a pretty rough character...

Had a neighbor break a axle on a 2090 Case in the field...at the far end. Took my 2470 Case 4wd and chained the drawbar assembly to the 3 point hitch on the 2470 and lifted the rear and took it to his shop for repair.

Broke a spindle on the steering axle of an N-6 combine, that was fun ! I worked oil field for a number of years, saw and repaired a lot of trailers that were brought back to the yard with axles chained up.

Shortly before I retired from the army I agreed to repair a bobcat for a young guy who had just gotten out and was trying to start a business. Had finished it up and was taking it out to him on K18 just east of Ogden KS. Just had new rears put on my F250 that afternoon. Lost the left rear just at dark at 65 with a 610 bobcat behind. State cop was right behind me. He radioed the cops in Junction city who got the tire shop owner out there with a new tire and rim. Very lucky for me. No one hurt and a state trooper as a whiteness. Tire shop owner had the truck back in the next day, replaced the studs on that side. Truck was older and beat up so instead of repairing the boz side I got new front tires too.

We had a '50 dodge 1 ton pickup. Made it into a flatbed with hoist. Dualled the back with the original "pickup wheels" but a spacer and long lug bolts. Coming down a hill and long straight away coming up on a left turn at a junction, made the turn and hit the gas, nothing. The outer dual was gone, lug bolts all broke off, inner wheel center running on hub, just spinning. Never did find the other wheel. Went to the junk yard and found "dual" wheels.

Had a '65 Chevy 2 ton truck with a 16' bed and hoist, long wheelbase, load of wheat. No matter that you loaded the back heavy, always to much weight on front axle. Going up a hill, right front spindle broke, dropped axle on the pavement. I turned the truck left instinctivly, to stay on the pavement, put a big bind in steering and broke the left spindle then. Sure glad it broke on the hill as I had been coming down a hill and long straight, probably had been going 65. When it broke, was going no more than 30, all happened in a hurry.

Pulled peppermint tubs with a 4430 JD with a rope release quick hitch on the 3 pt. Quick hitch was worn bad and loaded tub came unhooked going around a right turn. I slowed down catching the tub hitch on the quick hitch frame. Almost stopped when the tongue dropped and front of tub ran up on tractor tire. Everything looked OK, kept using tractor without quick hitch, just using regular drawbar and hitch pin. About a week later, going over a dike and down into a river crossing the axle housing broke, set tractor right down hard. Glad I wasn't pulling a full tub then....James

When I worked at the truck dealer in parts I had a call from the hi-way patrol. They said if anyone is looking for some semi dual wheels there is a set hit someone's house on st rt 250 in Apple Creek Oh. LOL They keep right on a going !

Had a rim blow apart on a semi trailer. It took out the out side and inside dual, ruined the dual spacer, mud flap and the cover on bearings. I was lucky I was on an approach ramp to an expressway. If I had of been on the the expressway it could have possibly killed someone if they were in the inside lane of the expressway.

I broke an axle off at the hub on my 16 ft. WW livestock trailer. The tire and hub rolled down I-75 and hit a brand new Chev. Impala in the front. It put a nice dent in the car but thankfully nobody was hurt. The five steers on board along with the trailer finished the ride home on a roll-off wreaker. Thank God for good insurance.
The wreaker driver took pictures of his load before we unloaded it. He said he never hauled cattle before and wanted proof of doing so.

Had our old Massey lose a dual in the feild while baling. No big deal. Well turns out the lugs are some kinda metric bolt. Tractor was from Canada. Metric front end and that kinda crap. Sold it afterwards.
Our 4755 Hesston 3x3 was in the same feild around the same spot, blew the whole axle out. The had a recall for axle crystallizing and breaking.
Had a 32ft custom made trailer, still have the pos, bent and lost the whole axle coming outta the feild with a load of hay. We had just put two brand new axles underneat it. Needless to say it was a miss. Parked that pos were I cant see it.
We used to move mobile homes, cant count how many times we lost tires, blew up rim, and all that lovely stuff. Wonderfull memories lol.

Steering axle '84 R model mack, tire blew, ring went into the woods, never found it, battery box blown off, fender damaged. I was hauling a heavy wet load of approved landfill capping material, guess that did not help as the load tickets were pretty darned heavy. One of 2 times I can recall hauling that much in a tandem or tri-axle.

Friends old honda accord, he used to run old ones then upgrade to more old ones LOL ! Coming back from a concert, other friend says get off at exit so and so, want to get some chew, when we pulled in the parking lot, the wheel and who knows what else with it, just broke off in a turn he was in to get into a parking stall by the front door. gouged brand new pavement, as this store had just opened. AAA never showed up, did not get home til sun up only ride was a crowded cab with other fares ! Better than the foot leather express LOL ! Had the other friend not had that kind of habit, (don't care for it myself) it would have happened at highway speed and that would not have been good at all, hail of sparks, out of control, roll over or what, glad we never found out !

Did break a spindle on the ford 850, was stress cracked without me knowing. It broke while mowing with the rotary mower, down slope and deep topsoil that you will sink in when wet, thankfully it was dry, lifted the front end up with the loader, tried reverse and the bucket turned into a skid plate, backed all the way up the hill, wish I thought of chaining that side to the loader arm, could have made it to the garage, but I put my top tool chest into a garden cart and wheeled it to the tractor.

Had a few break off of woods trailers. Going across field back to the yard, soon the whole load twisted didn't really notice till the tractor bogged down and I looked back and saw a wheel/ axle stub behind. Got it limped the rest of the way in with the trailer chained to the loader(trailer got scrapped) A second load we had on a home built trailer out to the woods with wheels and axels from a grain drill, the first or second load the axel frame under the load twisted. Didn't break the light grain drill axle assembly, slightly twisted yes. Had to unload that one to get it home and put a different axle assembly, a heavy pipe and chopper axles, under it.

Had the wheel go off the chopper wagon half full last year, jacked it up and put the wheel back on.
That reminds me I have to see what I can find on salvage equipment around here for lug bolts for it(have only 3 of 6 holding wheel on to get it home).

Thankfully never lost one on the road, that I can recall.

Worst I had was going down the road pulling a kewanee elevator for an Amish guy. Heard a loud bang and then a tire passed by Amish guy gets out and chases the tire down turns out bearing gave out . Went home to get one off my wrecked one and wouldn't you know different one now it's late Saturday no parts store open so we went back found all the pieces we could stuffed everything back in put a disc blade on the outside pumped full of grease and made it home.

Yes. Its been a few years back. I was working in the coastal hay field on my 48 JD A. Tractor started making a nasty thunking sound and quit moving. Thought the tranny had given it up. Shifted gears and same nasty noise and no movement. Started looking around and the left wheel had worked off. By God's grace, the axle had caught on the 1 inch lip on the inside of the rim just below where the axle goes through. The thunking noise was caused by the splines on the axle grinding on the lip of the rim.

I shut the tractor down and gingerly got off. I walked back to the house and told James what happened. We loaded up jacks, blocks and tools and went back to the hayfield. We were able to get it back on without incident. Whew!

Its never happened again.

Yep been there.
Hag and still have a JEEP Comanche (pickup based on the Cherokee) on which the left rear wheel and axle left at 60 mph. The manufacturer had built them with the oil seal INSIDE of the bearing and the bearings were supposed to be packed every 50k miles. That little fact was not in any manual so of course I assumed the bearing was lubricated by the gear oil in the pumpkin just like every other drive axle.
It was one strange feeling to feel the rear drop and look left to see the end of the axle at eye level. Took my foot off the gas shoved it into neutral and hung onto the steering wheel waiting for it to try to ground loop, it didn't. I had always heard that when a wheel comes off it will go faster then the vehicle and it is true. That got even with the front of the truck and took a hop over the top of the truck with the axle pointing down and rolled into the weeds. After collecting my shorts I called for a tow and retrieved the wheel and axle.

I lost one on a 10 wheel Haliburton pump truck back in the 80s.
They had just replaced an outer bearing on it and must not have put the star lock ring on the nuts. The whole inner axle - axle, brake drum and duals - came loose and walked out about 2' till it bent. I watched it happen in my left mirror.
We pulled the axle out, chained up that corner and I drove it back to the crib.
It wrecked the banjo so they knocked the truck over the head and used it for parts.
Fine with me.
It was a nasty old Emoryville IH with a 190 Jimmy in it. Slow, underpowered, loud.
Gave me a much newer 4300 to drive.

I had the Right rear duals pull out of the final drive on my JD 5020. That turned out to be quite a project. I had the left front wheel, and tire come off Of my 65 VW. It went under the car off to the left in a ditch. I was looking on the right side. Finally found it on the left side. Stan

1979 Chevy 454 one ton dually. Came to a stop sign out in the middle of nowhere, revved up, wouldn't move. Those were the days before cell phones, so walk to the nearest farm house, borrow a phone to call a wrecker. Wrecker comes, lifts the front, we're going down the road and I see a set of duals move out, out, out taking the axle with it, but we stopped before losing the whole thing. Bad inner bearing.

A couple of years ago I got into town at about midnight one Friday evening. I'm at the table eating dinner about 1 AM, I'm told that the AC-B is setting out by the road minus a rear, and get an apology to no end. It was dark, so I didn't see it when I pulled in, so I finished eating, then went out to take a look. Yep, walked right out of a rear rim and tire, my fault. I had heard it moving around, but didn't tighten the adjusters, so it walked out of one. I went to the barn, fired up a Deere, went out there picked the little B up, set it down in the barn, fixed it the next day.

Things happen.

1987 Jeep cherokee. Left rear wheel and axle let go. I saw it hit the road bank on the left side of the road and then I lost sight of it. I got the Jeep off the road and was looking for the axle when a guy setting on a porch said
your axle is in the garage across the road.. Sure enough it was there. I asked the garage owner if I could retrieve my axle and he thought I was kidding around until the neighbor came over and said he had seen it enter the garage. Good thing the door was open. We all had a good laugh.

Lost left rear on 63 F100 twice 30 some years apart. Worn stud holes. found wheel both times.Tierod end on 63 F100 drove it home. Broke axle on 930 Case big oxing. Lower balljoint 99 chev pu.

Glennster and I USED to have a horse trading business.
Invited a very nice couple from NE Texas to look at a couple BUT they drove the Dottir's John Deere A faster than I have ever seen!
They must live next to the Texas Speedway?

Dang - Posted twice.
Will Show the Dottir - She road it down and stopped her tractor after we went for a nice, "quiet" Saturday night tractor ride.

Several years ago I was a few miles east of Quinter, KS on I-70 on a Sunday afternoon when a wheel broke off my trailer and hit a van with a family in it square in the windshield. I was a mile from an exit so we both got off there and waited for the sheriff to show up. Sheriff said jump in and we drove up and down the interstate until we found the wheel laying next to a fence. Sheriff hauled me back to the pickup made sure no one was hurt told me a back way to get to a town and said have a nice day. The van took quite a bit of damage and had to be towed away. Sure scared the heck out of me!

lost the rear duals on a 65 ford 750 dead axle tandem loaded with rock old thing had a govenor on it ran 63 empty or loaded.they past me and went out into a field.

About 55 years ago, Friday night, got a date with a girl in town, Dad wants me to plow a garden for my old 4-H advisor. Not happy to begin with, but OK, still can make the date OK. I plowed the garden, started for home and the rim and tire came off the rear wheel. Seems the guys Dad had put on the new tires didn't understand A-C rim clamps and didn't tighten them right and the rims came loose. This was before cell phones, no way to explain to her what happened and I never got another date. Probably all for the best, Mrs. Paul and I have been married happily for 50 years.

Boy Scouts in 1964 on the way to a camp out. I am sitting in the rear seat left side . Driver is making a right sweeping turn and the next thing I see is the left rear wheel and axle of a Nash Rambler go past us. Problem was WE were the Nash rambler wagon!

Large Gehl Scavenger spreaders were great for snapping spindles. I lost count of how many broke. And never when the spreader was empty.

The year was 1968 and I was hauling a load of road gravel locally in a 1963 Chevy short cab end dump when the front right hand spindle twisted off. I heard a noise and felt a vibration from the front and stepped on the brakes and stopped. I was about a 100 yards from the stop sign or intersection I had just left. Not real exciting, but think of the possibilities.

Best one I saw was a box trailer that lost the whole bogie assembly out from under the trailer. Bogie assembly was in the median the trailer was upright but this happen on a curve at highway speeds and the trailer had bent over 40-50 guide rail posts.

In the late 70.s my uncle asked me if I would cut some beans for a friend of his that was ill and I said yes of course. I was to use his JD 45 with new 18.4x26 rice tires and rims to get threw the mud and things went good cutting his beans. Every now and then I would hear a sound like a 22 going off, This happened 5 times and I got to really wondering who was shooting that close to me and why? At the end of the field it was hard ground I raised the head up cut the wheel hard left and was heading to the wagon when I herd PERING! And down we went! The right rice tire and rim came off the combine. OH CRAP! Being 16 or 17 at the time I was scared to death that I just destroyed this guys combine! Come to find out the new guy that was sent out to put the new tires and rims on the combine used a 1 inch impact to tighten the lugs with and twisted them in half! First and only time in my life to almost roll a combine over, Not something you want to repeat! Bandit

yes ,, I have done it ,,. latest was the entire back axle come off the mf 750 combine ,,it was a easy fix with the 6 row head on the front , another time my trailer tire passed me as I turned into my drive, loose lug nuts,,.had trouble keeping lug nuts tite on new aluminum wheels 30 yrs ago too .. was going to church one morning and the ball joint broke out of a-frame on a 69 marquis convertible ,. put 71 lincoln parts on it and it is is doing fine now .. lost a whole front pedestal on the 800 case while raking hay in 6th gear ,, good thing it was case o matic ,. and I flipped down as I was making my turnaround, , I ended up on the ground leap frogging to get out of the way ..another time lost a front tire off a sc while raking ,,. bearing fAILED , ,I made my turn , and never realized I lost a wheel . til I felt it veering to rite ,. finally got the 1070 wheel fixt for good , it liked walking on the axle in to the cab . ,, hate to think what that would be like if she went off the end...!! if you use them , you are gonna lose them, just keep an eye on everything and pray no one gets hurt

reading all the posts and I recall a funny one ... need to mention the time we were kids and baling hay ,, I was on the wagon stacking ,,.. brother was runin the baler when we sheared a pin on a nh 68 baler , flywheel come off the shaft and took off rolling perfect with the stub shaft wogglin along into the pond about a hundred foot down the hill from us , the shaft was about 4 inches out of the water stikin straight up , we fisht him out with a boom pole ,, also figured out why we were going thru shear pins and fixt that too

I have lost axles at least 6 times. With Jeeps and baja buggys you accept that as part of the game, and have roll cages and harnesses. Never lost one on street rigs or equipment.

My kids still talk about the time 10 years or so ago we were on our way home from town in my 98 Chevy dualley...had just had new tires put on, and the right rear duals came off....it dropped down on the right rear, and one tire passed us on the left and one on the right, perfectly even and both rolled into the opposite ditches at the same time too... Lost lots of wheel and tires on race cars...most memorable was the time a right front stock rim tore the center out going into a corner...I came to a stop, but that wheel and tire hit the banking of the track, went over it, hit something else, and bounced higher than the light poles before disappearing into the distance...never did find that one..not as memorable but more exciting was when the right rear coilover shock mount broke on a latemodel car....would go into the corner ok, but as soon as I touched the gas the left front tire would come 4-5 foot off the ground and stay there all the way down the straight until I lifted for the next corner....was kinda fun but since I couldn't really see where I was going I pulled off.
