OT: Lincoln LS

Anyone have any experience with one? Looking at a 2002 with about 117,000 on it. Clean, bodywork very straight, coupe of minor door dings. Thanks!

12 years old with that many miles in good clean shape.I'd say it must be a pretty good car. After all,it's still just a used car.......

I drive used Caddys but I try to buy them for 2800-3800 with around 70,000 miles. When they run up to 130,000 time for another used one.Or if they need new shocks -- forget it.

I may be able to get it for about half of Blue Book. Everything I've read says it's one of the safest cars built, I was just wondering about reliability, and parts and repair complexity and cost.

I drive used Lincolns and find them not only very comfortable, very economical on gas and very serviceable. The current Navigator I use had 125000 mile on it . The 2002 mmodel you are looking at is a good buy. I am on my third used lincoln. The 1997 I had hit a guard rail at 665 MPH(wife driving and we got out with only one scratch. Very safe cars.

no experience with them. However....

they weren't your average Lincoln. THey were the joint effort with Jaguar when Ford bought Jag. Many common features between one of the Jag models and the LS. The last T-bird also shared alot of parts.

They were built in Wixom Michigan. That plant is gone and is now an RV dealer site.

a neat fact. They were probably the last "car" built here with a v8 and manual option.

since it may have some Foreign parts (Jag side) check out availability of some of the common parts (brakes struts ect) for location and pricing. ALso check for issues. for example if the transmission goes bad and it is a Jag (or European part) it may cost more to have it fixed than the car cost you.

I will say as an automotive supplier we have to supply service parts for Lincoln's and Caddy's longer than your average Ford/chevy.

I would look into one if i found a good deal.

I had a 2002 for a about 6 years. Great car, comfortable ride. I did not have any issues with it. Traded it in when it had about 190k on it. Still had a lot of life left.

Nice, comfortable car, but VERY expensive to repair. I have a couple customers that wish they didn't own one. One has no heat because the electric booster pump is bad. $700 part.

The V8 has decent power, not so much with the V6 but if you were just putting around you wouldn't notice much difference. V8's had valve cover gaskets that will leak both onto exhaust and into spark plug holes. Both engines had coil issues. A/C system was quirky with the dual zone not cooling/heating properly, also evap temp sensors act up shutting A/C comp off. The front suspension was a little weak, broken ball joints and noisy/worn components that are expensive parts and/or labor to replace. The transmissions have known issues with the shift solenoid pack and servo bores wearing in the case. Oh yea, the hydraulic cooling fan system can be a problematic too.

A manual trans was an option for the early V6 model, not V8. I consider the car was an entry level luxury car with some sportiness, it was really a plain and average car that I wouldn't consider luxurious or sporty though. The 2003-06 saw a fairly decent power improvement and ironed out a few of the known problems. Also keep in mind either engine prefers premium fuel.
