Fixed my hyd HF jacks

Since everyone said it wasn't worth it to fix them, I pulled the rubber plugs on the side of the cyl and filled them with Hyd oil. Couldn't get the plugs back in so I stuffed rags into the hole. Figured they would just shoot out the oil when I used them, but they didn't, and they worked just fine. I got to do some JB welding tomorrow, and will try to cover the holes with that.

the jack has to breath somewhat do to the reservoir oil changing volume when you extend the jack and let it down

Good luck with them. I bought 5 at one time and they wasted no time blowing the main seals when under load. I have 1 of the 5 that still works.

You can't JB Weld those fill holes because they also use that hole to breath. If you fill those holes it may cause a vaccum in the oil reservoir when jacking it up and prevent it from jacking. The pump won't be able to suck the oil into the pump cyclinder.

Did this with mine about one month ago. Takes a little skill but just be careful. I did the same as some others and just added some 30wt.

I think I mentioned my boy's jack was low on hyd fluid and I couldn't find parts did you?

If you can't find plugs, try Bubba's fix, duct tape.

i have an old homier floor jack ( pre harbor freight ) as well as a few bottle jacks, also older.

the bottle jacks i was able to repalce orings out of a generic kit.

the floor jack leaked. it was also an oring job, again. i found one in a multi kit to fit.

after that i filled them all with 90wt gear oil.

none have had a problem since. hold and jack fine. apparrently no leaks either.. even from the pretty crude needle valves they use to drop them.

Hi
I got a 20 year old cheap 8 ton here,from a company i used to sell jobber tractor parts for. sounds like that was a quality jack in those days. The plug fell apart on that. But i got one of those 600 piece," half the rubber wire grommets don't fit anything" kits. I found a softer rubber one with no hole in that fits my jack fill hole. it works perfect and if i mess it up I got 50 more L.O.L.
The jack before that had a thread tapped in the hole and a short bolt and fiber washer on it, when that plug got lost on a job and the oil was leaking out, i don't remember that not working right after, it got the thread bent on the extension in the end so it was scrapped.
Regards Robert

Funny you should mention HF jacks. I have one of their older orange colored jacks that I have had for many years. I bought it when they first opened their store in my area. The only thing that was ever wrong with it is that it will not go down slowly. No matter how carefully or slowly you twist the handle, it doesn't go down until all of a sudden it drops rapidly. For that reason, I never really liked it. BUT....it has been sitting outside in my driveway for at least 5 years, and still works just the same as it always did. I was really hoping for a reason to replace it. {{{sigh}}}

One of mine is orange. Someone said to oil the rubber plugs and theyed slip right back in the ports. They DONT.
