The original owners manual for my Massey Ferguson 35 calls for straight mineral oil or the next best thing SAE 80 GL1. I can't seem to find any SAE 80 GL1 anywhere. A buddy told me I could use 80W90 GL5 but I don't want to buy any unless I'm sure. Any advice?

As stated, no on the GL-5. I got my straight 90 GL-1 through a distributor that carries Xtreme oil products (not advertising for them, but I know they make it-probably other companies that do as well).

In Europe we only ever use 15W30 universal oil in these tractors...engine and transmission....It is what MF recommends and it works well especially when it is real cold in winter....no waiting for oil to warm up to get hydraulics to work......We have tractors with very high hours on our farm which
never used any other oil and without any problems....Try it you will be impressed!

GL-1 is available from NAPA (may need to order), your MF dealer, and other sources.

Most farm stores no longer stock it but some carry so-called Ford Transdraulic GL-I, which is the same.

When I had a '59 TO-35 I used 15w-40 supposedly the same viscosity as 80/90 at normal outdoor temps. Bought it in 2 gallon jugs at Wally World. Do not use GL-5.
