Grain drill question

I have a john deere 450 drill with a grass seed box. I planting alfalfa and Timothy with a cover crop of annual rye. My question is as follows. The alfalfa and the Timothy will go in the grass box but what about the rye grass. The seed is bigger than the alfalfa and the Timothy and is being seeded at a much lower rate. Would the rye grass go in top box as well? Wouldn't that cause problems for the alfalfa and Timothy? I can to back to oats as a cover but I was worried about them drying down. Also looking at my drill the big box can't plant rye at 5 lbs per acre according to chart.

Help please

I would use a spin spreader to broadcast the rye seed and then use your grain drill to plant the alfalfa and grass seed. Plant the rye first and then do the drill thing. I would run a culipacter over everything after you are done planting.

I never have planted much hay, so I can't help you much there, but 5#s rye seed /acre?? That will be so thin you will have to look for a plant. I seed cover crop rye at 50#s/acre and it's not that thick of a stand. Around here everyone uses oats for a cover crop when planting alfalfa. Rye has a tendency to be a natural weed suppressor, will it stunt or slow the alfalfa & timothy? Perhaps I'm confused. Chris
