value of a 1970 boat, motor and trailer

I bought this boat last Nov.. The trailer is a rusty Spartan with tires that look new. I was told a trailer alone is worth $200. The engine is a 85hp Force that the previous owner said had a nearly new power head on it. He ran a business that rebuilt outboards and so I do believe that it is true. I got it to start yesterday and it sounded good. My boat is only rated for a 70hp and so I am not going to keep it for my own use. The boat is a Chrysler Charger 118. It is a fiberglass boat about 14 or 15 feet long. The steering cable is rusted solid. So is one of the throttle cables. The power trim motor is shot and it does not have a prop on it. A new prop is $145 and a new trim unit is about $135. The vinyl seats are in bad shape. This is not a fishing boat.

I have seen an ad in the paper for a salvage yard, that is about 4 hours away. What is a fair price for this boat? I need to make some money on it to pay for the rebuild of a 9n money pit.
Thank you
Steve

Hook the boat to the 9N and drive them both over a cliff, you'll end up money ahead.

The cost of dumping the boat in the landfill should be covered by selling the motor and trailer. I doubt it will bring in a lot of income.

That is what I thought also. But I know of at least one stupid kid who would think it is a steal at any price. Furthering his education might cost me a friend.

Did you say how much you paid for it?

It is NOT worth putting anything into it, just try to recoup as much of your initial investment as you can.

Sounds like a hole in the water to throw your money in to. The wife opened her mouth and got me stuck with one that was in better shape than that, trailer and all. A guy owed me $200 and she said we'd "take that boat" for what he owed us. He delivered it before I could put a stop to it. It sat around here killing the grass for a few years. She had bought a new battery and she and the boys put it in the water once.
I took it to a consignment auction and I think it was $135 that I ended up getting for it.

Run an ad for $500 or so and see what happens. If you get a strike you can 'negotiate' . Don't forget the old horsetraader's mantra - 'If he's asking 10 it's worth 9 and he'll probably take 8 so offer him 7'. 8)

I have a 1970's tri-hull boat on trailer with 105 Chrysler motor. Last I used it was about 12 years ago.

I couldn't find anyone that would take it for free! Last fall, had a guy that said he would take it. The boat is still sitting here. LOL!

Yeah, run an add. You might find some 22 year old kid like mine. He paid $300 for a piece of crap old fiberglass tri-hull of some sort. He stripped out all the rotten upholstery, then left it parked in the edge of may pasture about 3 years ago. Now I gotta haul it off somewhere.

Yeah, it's not an old tractor.
The tractor I bought recently wasn't a best seller to begin with and it wasn't running.
So when the seller was asking around about what it was worth one fellow just asked him; "What does it weigh?"

The Force and Chrysler outboards are one in the same until Merc got involved and then they got better. If you want to make use of the 85 hp Force motor on your other boat rated for 70 hp it is not going to be a problem. Go for it. You will get more use out of it at that point than you will get out of it selling it. They just are not worth much. The old Chrysler hull you have in the condition it is in has no value honestly. Too much needed to make it seaworthy again. Pull the engine off of it and sell the engine by itself or use it on your other boat and scrap the Chrysler hull. Turn the trailer into a little utility to use on the farm and you are good. If you want to sell the 85 hp Force find out how old it is. Force was not around in the 70's, they were Chrysler back then. The name changed from Chrysler when they were bought out by Bayliner boats. They were a low cost engine to put on their boats. At one point Mercury owned the engine and was selling it as a tier 2 low coast engine. They upgraded them with Merc lower units and the Merc ignition systems. Bayliner was eventually bought by Brunswick (AMF). The good part of the Force engine was they very simple and easy to get parts for and made good low end power. They would not run with Merc or OMC in the top end, but were very reliable and easy to work on.

I had a boat and trailer worth about $800, for sale 5 years ago. Due to the dropped economy boats were not selling and i got a few very lowball offers. I wound up giving it to some disbled Veterans who couldnt afford one but fished a lot.
now that the lakes are very low they are worth even less here in Ca.

On Buckeye Lake in Ohio, nothing (State is keeping lake at winter level due to dam problems, so speed boating will be very tricky, it's a shallow lake in good times)

Value? Little newer, charged $500 to haul it off.

So, you want to be a boat mechanic when you grow up?

Keep that rig running for a season, and you will be able to call yourself a boat mechanic! LOL

I would ask the guy who "told you" the trailer was worth $200 to start writing a check. I'm sorry but that boat has no cash value.

gotta go with the others here. Most likely won't find a buyer. Hull is wort less than zero and will cost just toget rid of. Used motor like that? Put a prop on it and mount it on a legal, safe registered hull to test run it you may make a couple of bucks one t after cost. The trailer is scrap priceses ate best.
