1966 case 830d good, the bad, the ugly?

Anyone have thoughts on one of these? Found one locally that seems reasonable, I have never had a case, what would it be worth? Average paint, has cab, no doors though.

They go for around 2000 to 2500 dollars in good overall condition and the cab really does not do much for the value. A fellow I knew had one for quite a long time and seemed to get along pretty well with it. The motor has a balancer assembly that should not be ignored for the age. Most likely has Case-O-Matic which is a power shift type high low which is subject to wear. I don't recall anything specifically as an issue to that tractor. They probably should get more respect than what they do versus other makes from the same era.

The 830 Case Comfort King is a great tractor! They are very durable and quite simple and easy to work on. Parts for the most part are available through most CaseIH dealers, although, some are better at supplying them than others. What is it worth? Lots of variables there and the big ones are condition and location. I have seen them from 2k to 10k depending on condition where they are at. There are 2 different versions, the Caseomatic drive and the standard dry clutch. The Caseomatic uses a torque converter similar to an automatic transmission on a car. Generally, Caseomatic tractors will bring hundreds less than the same model with the dry clutch. There are several things to watch and look for on these. One is that they are prone to crack a head if the water is allowed to run low. Also, make sure to keep the hydralic oil full. They can seize the High range gear to the input shaft in the trans if they don't have proper lubrication. Best to be a gallon or 2 over full than low. I do agree with NY 986. I do believe they are one of the most undersung tractors of that late 60's era.

It's been a long time since I saw the one I knew. There were two small levers to the left of the steering column. I thought the larger one was a high-low power shift called Case-O-Matic. My apologies if that is not true.

They are highly sought after around me for chore and hay tractors. If 2 guys that know what they are start bidding on a case-o-matic it will go high near me. Average they will sell for 3500-5500, but ive seen nice one sell over 7,000. The com may be the best trany setup for a front end loader ever put in a tractor. They do require learning to drive them tho because they are not like any other tractor, but if you can drive a car with an auto trany you can drove a COM. The dry clutch models are just like any other brand.

this one supposedly had a new clutch 300 hours ago, they state it has hi and low range and 4 forward and 2 reverse, so guessing it is not a case-o-matic, which does not really bother me. I think I may go look at it tomorrow, the asking price is $3500 it appears to be the right size for what I am looking for, row crop and 64 hp.

We had two identical 1965 830 Ck gassers back in late '60,s and '70,s on the farm. Neither were COM and had no problems with either one. Enough grunt to haul 4/16,s on our farm. Had a 4 row been puller and windrower on one for dry beans. Perfect size for many things. Low rpm engine , no need for an "over/under" trans. We paid $ 3500 for each back then and when sold in early '80,s brought the same and still do today. So other than any repairs, they are "free" to own/use.

30 series were great tractors. I've never run a case-o-matic. Mine is the 8 speed dual range drive 730. Not much difference between it and the 830. Just a few cubic inches and a few horsepower. My uncle bought this one in 1964 and I still use it for a few chores.

COM is a great system. It's nothing like the Selecto-speed Ford that some people try to compare it to. It's just a locking torque converter, great for farm work and a bullet proof as you can get in something like that. Problems come from people who never, ever change oil or filters or read the op manual on how to use, which is dead simple really.
