I have a buddy that is wanting to buy a swather in Canada. He asked the dealer that has it for sale what must he do to bring it across the boarder legally. The salesman did not have a clue, ao I am asking you guys what must we do to get this across the boarder and stay out of jail?

He will need paperwork to confirm country of manufacture, bill of sale etc. If he hauls it back himself it will b a lot easier and cheaper otherwise he will have to use a customs broker. At least that's I've needed when bringing something this way. Usually its pay the 13% sales tax and we're on our way.

animal,

New or used, like most things with a warranty from the US, it's not covered here.
I would assume it's the same there, they have to protect themselves . I'm sure that salesman knows just wants to make a sale.

Then you have the sticky fingered, Import Custom guys they want their pound, it's like a lottery, prize goes to the one that catches the biggest duty.

PS I don't Know, best to talk to a customs broker, maybe check out two.

There is no tax involved, assuming it was made in the U.S.A or Canada. Machine will have to be thoroughly washed of any and all organic matter (soil, chaff, etc,) You will likely require a certificate that the engine meets EPA requirements. U.S. Customs will want 2 hour advance notice of you and machine arrival at border. Depending on the border crossing, you can take a chance on playing stupid and you might get lucky. otherwise, hire a customs broker (likely less than$100.). Most cross border trucking companies have a broker they use on a regular basis.

In the 60's my dealers near the border used to move equipment back and forth across the border for a $5 brokerage fee. Imagine the government has found ways to extract more money from that process since then.

One main thing to remember is the person or people going over to Canada to pick up this equipment has a valid passport to get back into the United States.

# 1, machine has to be clean. no dirt or oil leaks.
if using trucking company they will look after you and let you know what is needed.

I have a friend who grew up in Canada and now lives here in Kansas. About a year ago he brought an Allis 175 tractor south from his family's farm in Alberta and didn't have any problems at all getting across the border. He did his homework and the main thing that he needed was proof of ownership but I'm not sure exactly what this consisted of, maybe just a "bill of sale" transferring ownership from his father to himself.

It really has nothing to do with us Canadians if you are bringing it into the states. If we buy machinery in USA we have to have it washed and bill of sale. When you pull it into your country it is your border that might not let you in ,not ours stopping you from getting out.

I would call border crossing you wish to cross with it and ask them.

Canadian Customs " Hello sir welcome to Canada , How long will you be staying , Enjoy your stay " US Customs " Get out of the car and start stripping down to your underware."

It is different going from Canada to the States but I know bringing stuff into Canada from the States the equipment needs to be clean and we have to have a bill of sale and receipt for the amount paid. The border guard looks over the papers, inspects the item coming across, charges 13% Ontario sales tax, and then away you go. Not normally a big hassle. I would call the border crossing where you are going to bring it across to be sure.

Make certain your buddy has nothing in the vehicle or on himself. That could have anything to do with hunting, fishing, guns, ammo, archery and even anything sharp or pointy.
I use a broker to bring equipment across from the US because of the hassles.
