UPDATE-Farmall Wheels Stuck

Good news! Following all of your advise I did find why my Farmall wheels were not moving, the wheels were, one going one way the other going another way. After all the dragging, sliding wheels and the like. Following your advise I found that the transmission was stuck in 1st and 2nd gear. Attached is a photo that says a thousand words. I took off the old shifter plate and stared into a "mud hole" yes water and grease and sludge. I took a big screw driver and put the gears in their places, all the gears looked to be in good shape. Tried the old cover, NO WORK! So,I put on another gear shifter top and it worked lie a charm. (I need three bolts that were missing on the old shift cover) Went into every gear smoothly. Now to clean up the mess of grease and water to cleanse out the whole system. Your suggestions are truly appreciated in this matter. When I finish this part I shall go to another problem (I'm sure).It appears that someone began with good intentions to restore but gave up on it.

My guess would be someone probably tightened the shift cover down with a fork setting on top of the gear or in the wrong place.

Any and all ideas appreciated as to how is the best way to wash all that mess from the transmission and whatever other parts that are affected.

Wash it out with kerosene or diesel fuel. A 2 1/2. Gallon weed sprayer with diesel works good to spray it out.

what I have done is remove the drain plug, and start pouring gas in until it is fairly clean. Fill it with fluid, run it, and drain again, then fill with fresh fluid. I would suggest if you smoke don't while doing this, and do it away from buildings. I guess you could substitute diesel for the gas to be a little safer

Drain it out and leave the drain plug out a day or 2. Then fill with gas and HEET and let sit a day or 2. Drain that out and let it drain over night and you will be likely be good to go from there.

Back in the day before modern oils and full flow filters we used to run the engines with a fuel oil or kerosene for several minutes then drain to cleanse the engine, that was a common thing back then, I would not work the tranny but running no load would be ok.

IF the tranny oil is hydraulic system oil also I would not do that tho.

Hello;
I was thinking of a mixture of mineral spirits and diesel but didn't know before I checked with you all.

HEET is an additive that absorbs water in gas. Wal-Mart or any auto parts tore has it or you can also use a bottle of 90% alcohol since that is what HEET is. When I say fill I mean just that to the point it covers every thing. Than you can drain the gas mix and filter it and run it if you want or use it to start a brush pile on fire

Jack it up and put on stands. Start it and run for a bit in gear. 1-2 gear at a idle, I had to do this on my M when I got it. Pulled the plug and had to drive a punch in to bust the crud.

Hello;
I recall the days that Dad would drain out the oil from the engine, put plug back in fill it with diesel and start the motor for 60 seconds. Drain it and fill it with oil.

Old, gotcha! now I know, sound like a jolly good idea. Say any of you have three bolts laying around that you would care to part with?

Super Trucker;
Good idea, I'm always amazed at what can come out of these motors and transmissions after they have sat up so long.

I forgot to report that after I put everything together as described. I put it in neutral then pushed the tractor myself (about 2 feet) it worked.

They say some guys can screw up an anvil with a rubber hammer, but that doesn't cover breaking a transmission cover.

HOW would someone do that?

We use diesel for cleaning them out. If not too bad we put about half to 3/4 full and drive around in all gears for a few minutes and then drain. Since you have the cover off you can use a pump up sprayer and diesel and some brushes and work a lot of stuff out. Just be sure you get all the loosened crud out of the bottom!

Looks like pretty good welding job.
I got several wood shim shingles, about 18" long, and removed the bottom drain plugs, and schoooched out all the bottom debris, solids, greese, rust, crawdads... glad I did that, no amount of diesel would have done the job.

What, alcohol to absorb water? I thought everyone here says alcohol attacks water into a tank. lol

Not saying you old, just referring to what others have said.

Yup alcohol is a good drying and cleaning agent. It will clean your gung right out of tank.

Hello CenTex Farmall;
I'm going or should I say I am in the process of trying everything that I can that all of you are telling me. I will be able to give a sensible report within a few days of "processing" (means digging grease, crud and anything else foreign)the system.

Hello Bob;
I'm laughing so hard at you joke hard I can't hardly see to type. Actually I have done some serious thinking myself, "how does someone break a transmission cover?". The only answer that comes to mind are 1.white lightening, 2.Told young son to "put that cap on that trans"-3.Asked wife to be kind enough to install the trans. cap, (perfect time for revenge for that money spent.
We have evidence, now we're hunting the reason (state of mind)??????????????

walt

Forgot to add that you can let the diesel in the catch bucket sit and most of the crud will settle out. Filter through a rag when you pour it back in the sprayer.

Hello Old;
Thank you for the information on the bolts. I shall find some next time I go to town.
best regards
walt

Hello Old;
I'll take one of these bolts with me and if I find no success then I shall contact you.
Thank you!
regards.
