Had hopes of putting my 1030 together this weekend. Things didn't go so well tho. The pistons were siezed in the sleeves and the sleeves were also stuck in the block. We tried everything to get them out. Couldn't get a puller on them because the pistons were there. We put a jack under the sleeves and jacked up the tractor for pressure and hit on both the pistons and sleeves but couldn't get them loose. Tried heating the sleeve and that popped it loose and moved an 1/8" then stopped. We worked all afternoon on friday and got 1 out. Worked all morning saturday and got another. For that one I used the plasma cutter and cut as much of the sides of the sleeves as posible then busted that out, then we could drive the piston out. After that we could drive the rest of the sleeve out the bottom of the block.

Here is a pic of what it looked like before.

After some thinkin and a couple second opinions we decided that taking the engine out and removing the crank so we could have better access was the thing to do. So we pulled the engine. Good thing too because when I pulled the front cover I found the timing gears had rusted badly. They would have failed quickly so it's good we cought it.

Getting the crank out was mo picnic either, the crank was turned so you couldn't get at the front and rear rod to get the bolts out. We eventually got enough movement to get the crank out of the journals so we could get the rod bolts out.

Then it was just hammering away til we got the sleeves and pistons out. We used a 1" shaft and 20 lb mall. The rust between the piston and sleeve had swelled the sleeve so there was no way the sleeves would move til the pistons were out. Most of the pistons just busted apart before letting loose. Once they were out we could drive the sleeves out, but they were still tight. We did get done just before dark tho. We also found that one lobe on the camshaft was rusted as well and the clutch was not too good either. So now it's on hold again til I can get a camshaft and timing gears and clutch.
My favorite youngest son Nick was there to help and I'm very glad too. I wouldn't have been able to do it myself. Can you tell from the pic where he was wiping his hands all day? Lol.
I kept telling him to use wrags, but every time I looked he was using his coat. He decided that after the last 2 days if your day is so bad that even Murphy is feeling sorry for you you could be living under Jon's law, it's just like Murphy's law only worse.
