OT: 1967 Ford Pickup

A man near my job is selling a 1967 Ford F250 camper special. It's got the 6-cylinder and he said it's the 300. Manual steering and brakes. 4-speed. The body's in great shape and almost rust free. He wants 3,000. I hate manual steering on old pickups, so I'm wondering how hard it would be to convert to power steering. Has anyone in old tractorland made this swap on an old Ford pickup? I converted a 1971 IH half-ton to power steering and it wasn't that hard. But my son's rear-ended people 3 times driving that truck and it might be beyond repair. That's why I'm thinking about the Ford.

A trip to the junk yard should fix you up . I have a '68 F100 with manual steering that I still drive , I don't think PS would be that much difference, But a F250 is a different story with it's wide tires ...

Ive had 3 of those old Fords(67;70) none had Ps. The 67 had 300,000 miles on it,the current '70 only has 150,000.Lack of PS has never bothered. In my opinion, buy something newer with PS already on it. Another thing,Since your son seems to have a "rear ending" problem, buy him a cheap 'beater',something for under $1500. Better to wreck something like that than a 'rare' classic.

I have to go with everybody else on this. I had a 65 and a 66 F250 with manual steering. No problem at all. I remember going to the Ford dealer and talking to them about ordering a new one with 4wd and no PS. He advised against ever buying a 4x4 without, but a two wheel drive is fine.

It's do-able, there is even a 'Kit' out there. You will have to do a search as I don't have a link. I was recently looking at purchasing an '70 F-250 4X4. I remembered a relative of mine did a '71 many years ago. I did some looking and found the parts available - not cheap - but available.

(quoted from post at 18:30:47 04/02/15) I did this on a 78. Get the pump, gear box and steering column. It bolted right on.

Go to ford-trucks.com They have done everything possible and impossible with those year models. I have a 71 F350 with factory power steering and it's integral(in the steering box).

We bought a brand new 1968 Ford 3/4 T with 240/creeper 4 spd and no ps and never needed it. Stiff king pins and/or out of alignment causes them to steer hard.

Every Ford I ever converted to P/S took a P/S steering column..
I wounder about the Camper Special every one I have ever seen was dolled up with a big Big motor not a 6 shooter....

Back in them days you could order'em like you wanted them...

The situation must be different where you live. Seriously. Because around here, IF you can find a truck that old in a yard, all that's left is the "bones". Of course we all know that parts are listed for certain models but I daresay that with a little "yankee ingenuity" many others could be modified to fit. Or, to rephrase that, "Never tell a true hot rodder that it can't be done!"

It's not hard to convert to PS.

I would visit my local wrecking yard, preferably one that lets you pull your own parts. Tell them what you are trying to do. Ask for a package price and let them know you'll probably be back several times getting odds and ends.

Odds are you'll be scavenging parts off 2 or more trucks (300 6 cyl in F250's are rare). The steering gear and maybe the column will need to come off a F250, probably a 4x4. The pump and brackets can come off any 300 engine.

But... $3000 sounds high for that truck, unless it's exceptionally clean and low milage.

If you want more information on the swap, go to FORDification.com, a lot of knowledge and practical experience there. I'm with DeltaRed on the idea of getting something that is not a classic for your son to drive. I've been driving my 1967 F-100 with the 240/3 speed/manual steering for the last 16 years, I don't find it hard to drive and I'm skinny. But I also drove old tractor/trailers in the early 1970's hauling swinging meat out of Iowa, those trucks scaled 10,000 pounds on the steer axle without power steering.

You're asking the wrong question. If he has a habbit of rear ending you don't want that truck for sure. They're old drum brakes and do not stop easy.

just for the heck of it I looked up your 67 napa still lists a pump hoses and replacement power steering gearbox for that truck
