New to this farmall f12

I just got this farmall f12 and I am new to the f series tractors and would like to know a litle more. I do know that this is a bit rarer because it has the hydraulics but I dont know what is up with the flywheel that is not in the bell housing and if someone could tell me if I could put a starter in the picture hole (if thats what it is for) and if so what type of starter will work. It is a 1936 and I believe we got a good deal on it but any info on it is appreciated.

That's not factory so it will be hard to find a starter I would think. You'll have to look around at some old starters and see which one has
the mounting holes directly across from each other. Not sure if a Farmall H starter would fit but maybe. I have seen starter ring gears put
on the belt pulley of an F12 before.

If it were mine I would put the factory flywheel, clutch and bellhousing back on it. Those parts aren't hard to find...

That is not the flywheel. It is a sprocket someone put on to get electric start.nothing "factory" about. You're on your
own....But leave it as is and put a starter on it. Will make a pretty unusual/unique show piece. I garantee it will be the only
one at the show. And will get LOTS of positive comments

Nothing special about having the hydraulics, just not common. That's not the flywheel, just a sprocket someone used to farmerize an electric start set up, or possibly top drive something else, who knows what.

That sprocket looks plum scary to me. I'd take it off. Hard telling what they used for a stater. maybe it was an idea that didn't work?

If it still has the hand crank that works and your leg won't get caught in the exposed teeth, leave it as is. Old F series had separate frame with engine, clutch as unit 'coupled' to tranny/rear end by multi piece cross and X 'coupler- think of old GM drive shaft CV center double cross bearings and outer sleeve. One rig in Archives for F20 was a automatic transmission 'flex plate ring gear' from a Chevy Powerglide(?) torque convertor fitted into the 'coupling' and the starter bracket fitted to the frame for the standard car starter. Battery box bolted to other side of frame, standard car battery used with couple universal switch and then the F20 has a easy to start from seat option. Battery may have been externally charged periodically or might have had a alternator added- didn't explicitly say what was used. Your rig seem likely something similar- look for a match car starter like a common Chevy C10/20 or maybe a common Ford - a salvage yard or old hot rod parts store parts man might be able to look at size of wheel, number of teeth and get you a off the shelf $59.95 rebuild that fit Chevy 6 from 1950 to 1990s or maybe the Ford post 1964 with nose that had about 40 years production. Old part number 3124 Ampere Auto comes to mind. RN

What does your hyd. pump look like? The original style pump which was mounted on the LH side opposite the belt pulley was only used to run a hyd. cultivator lift. By the looks of that starter jury rigging I'm guessing the hyd. pump has been rigged up too??

Thanks to everyone who replied every bit helps. The hyd pump is original but i don't know how to explain it so I'll just post another picture at a latter time
