Ih Truck Question

I'm planning on changing the transmission oil in my 74 IH 1600 Loadstar, is 90wt. gear oil ok to put in it?? Anyone know about how much it will hold, the tranny is the 5+2

I would use 50wt,but if you don't drive in very cold weather it should shift and drive OK with 90wt.Mark

Pretty sure the factory fill would have been 90 weight. As to capacity, must likely there was more than one 5-speed used... could be IH or Clark or Spicer, (for example) and refill capacity will vary accordingly.

My 1971 Loadstar 1600 manual calls for straight #90 mineral oil. Not EP gear oil. Mine is a T17 four speed trans. and holds 7 pints according to the book. I have been running #30 engine oil in mine for a few years and it works well.
