Has anyone ever seen a Western snow plow pump with cable control, do they work, can they be converted to solenoid type? Thanx Al71

I have one.

Works great, but the one downside is weather deteriorates the plastic shield on the cables where they're exposed to the elements on the front.

Have to replace the cables about every five -7 years. About $30 each. I have a new pair on hand, will install them this fall.

I'd think converting to solenoids would be more bother and expense than it would be worth.

There's a joystick that mounts on the trans hump. Just a single "T" handle about 5" tall.

You pull it back to raise the blade, push it forward to lower the blade, and twist it either to the right or left to angle the blade.

The cables are armored cables like overgrown choke cables with a plastic shield, about 1/4" in diameter overall. The cables run from the joystick through the firewall, through the engine compartment, and connect to a control box on the hydro-electric pump on the blade frame.

As I said above, the only drawback is the plastic shield on the cables will weather.

It's such a simple and trouble free system I can't imagine anyone trying to convert it to solenoids.

Yep i had one , best snow plow i ever had . Simple to use and it ALWAYS worked . And why would you want to add electronics to something that never ever quit in the middle of a Blizzard . We won't go into how many times the fancy one with BUTTONS quit when your battling a major storm fighting to stay ahead .

Also when you have a problem with the plow check the cables. Mine would somehow move and make the arc going into the pump tighter and they wouldn't move properly and plow won't work. There is a specific arch needed to work and its in the manual. Best plow I ever had and it's been on 3 trucks and still pushing.

You know, I never thought of that. I might try it when I install new ones this fall. Or a tubing of some sort. Gasoline hose might work and wouldn't be as big as heater hose.
