Starter Generator Rotation Issue

Question I have is can a Delco Starter Generator be reversed?

The one I have is CW pulley end and I need it to be CCW.

IMHO, while it probably CAN be done, why not advertise a bit and try to trade it for one for a Cub Cadet that already runs the right direction?

I asked the same question at a starter shop a few years back on a Delco S/G and was told it would have to be rewound and some other stuff changed.

I had a cub that had that set up...guy that rebuilt it said you needed armature and fields to reverse

You need to reverse the current either going thru
the fields or the armature but not both. I would
switch the wires that are connected to the carbon
brushes if I were doing it.

If you reverse the field and armature current flow the generator will rotate the same direction as it is now, it's the same as switching the battery cables. You only want to reverse current flow in one not both the field and armature.

I was just thinking... I'll bet the brusholders are "canted" the opposite way in starter/generators designed for the opposite rotation, and even if you were to electrically reverse one, the brushes would likely chatter/be pulled away from their support during operation.

rue, Bob & positioned differently (on the clock, so to speak), because of the Counter EMF being in a different position due to rotational direction.

A cousin had the starter off of his Jeep CJ2A and had it apart. When he put it back on the engine, it turned backward. He had rotated the brush plate 90 degrees when it was being reassembled.

Would this work on starter/generator? I do not know for sure.
