Sold some scrap

I am not one to sell scrap. For what little I have I just give it away or put it in the trash.

Was gona make a run to the parish dump today when I noticed most of what I needed to take was old metal. Rotted out 55 gal drums used for burning; old dryer; couple of old bikes my son in law picked up for parts; ect.
About filled up my 6.5 foot pickup bed.

So since the dump is 30 miles away and the scrap yard is only 15 I figured I would save some gas and just leave the real trash behind and take the metal to the scrap yard.

They marked it as Tin and Iron mix. $100.00GT
Then I figured out a GT is 2240 lbs so that knocked it down to $89 a ton.

They could of kept the $14.30 I got if I could have bypassed the scale; parking; showing my drivers license; giving a fingerprint; and signing a form that said I really owned the stuff.

Dang crack heads must be having a hard time making ends meet with scrap prices as low as they are.

$90 a ton at my local junkyard in western ny. Had to convince my son now is not the time to scrap stuff for gas money. Bill

In Indiana you have to have a HVAC business to sell copper from a central A/C. Which is a good thing, crack heads were steeling A/C.

Where I scrap, I have an ID.
They already have a copy of my driver's license. No thumb prints yet.

So you saved gas by only driving half as far and put a bit of cash in your pocket but you're complaining about it.

I have been working on a "collection" of scrap of all kinds for about three years now, hauling off two or three pickup loads a year. When you are a "Mr. Fixit" you don't realize how much stuff can accumulate over the years. You know how it is, "If you get rid of it, you will need it tomorrow". I know the market has receded drastically, but I don't have any place to store the stuff so I have no choice. My local dealer runs a pretty tight ship, central air and heat pump components, copper radiators etc. and several other items, you either have to furnish proof of purchase and/or fingerprint, drivers license, and when I carried four or five old automobile radiators, they placed them on a table, made me stand beside them and took my picture! Yet, in spite of such precautions, three people were arrested recently for stealing brass flower containers from a cemetery!

I'm not really complaining.
Have never sold scrap before cause like I said it is not worth my trouble for what little bit I have. I usually just give it to my son in law.

To get a decent price you really need to separate all the like metals into piles and haul in separate loads.

The post was more about I would of just let them have the stuff if I could have just pulled in; dumped it off and left. The $14 was not worth my time to go threw all the crack head rig a ma row.

North MO we are getting 75.00 per ton. I need to tear down a house trailer, but it is not worth the time right now.

John, I feel the same way. I just put stuff out by the curb and a guy down the street picks it up in his little p/u. He spends every day driving around and fills his truck. I can't imagine he gets more than what you got since a ton would put his axle on the ground.

Main beams in my shop are old mobile home frames and it has been there 25 plus years. I scrap a lot as in build buildings and deer stands etc form scrap. I almost NEVER sell any scrap. I have less then $300 in my shop building and my hay barn both built form scrap iron and roofing

Now would be the BEST time to tear down that house trailer. You have plenty of time to separate the materials, and are not under the gun to get it to the scrap yard before the prices drop.
On the other hand, if you wait for prices to rise, you will then have to hurry to get it torn apart, organized, and hauled. And, in the time that you are working on it, prices could fall again.

504, I took a bunch of copper drain pipe and brass fitting mix to the scrap yard in Wright City. Good price. He said sheet scrap is still falling, but copper and aluminium are holding good or rising. Aren't trailer sheets aluminium?

I agree-best time to get it ready til price is up. I have a bunch of ''one of these days'' I gotta separate the parts I want to save from an item & go to scrapper with rest. always get too busy. I can always tell when price is pretty topped out, signs go up, wreckers/trucks travel my country road. many stop @ gate if they see me,or leave a card, wanting to buy. So, if I start this spring, I may get it done--A person might have a lot of time before the price is decent again-- but who knows?

It is getting tough for crack heads and folks in the salvage business. We park our equipment and even work in the yard when they need help. But right now there is nothing much coming in and they are talking about laying off people. They also say they are looking for steel to go lower and the rest to stay about the same. We sold two loads (not very heavy dump trailer loads) and got a little less than $400. Two months ago We bought 19 3000 to 5000 gal storage tanks and two 48ft trailers. Had a person say they would take them all but one trailer at a price considerably higher than scrap. BUT is only wanted 1 trailer and two tanks so far as his intention is to sell them before He takes possession of them. Which may sound a little hinky but the price He is giving it's worth the wait.
