There was once an Indian chief who had three daughters. When the first one got married, he gave her a deer skin. In due time, she had a baby boy.

When the second got married, the chief gave her an elk skin. In due time, she had a baby girl.

When the third married, he gave her a hippopotamus skin. She had twins, a boy and a girl.

Just goes to prove, "The squaw of the hippopotamus is equal to the sum of the squaws of the two other hides".

(Couldn't help myself).

Pete in MD- you are correct.

The way I do some math was how my Dad taught me. LOL In my mind the Theorem is C= the square of (Asquared + Bsquared)

Just like how he taught me to add. I don't do...22 + 49 = 2+9=11, write down the one and carry the ten then 2+4=6 plus the
(1)ten I carried=7 for the total of 71.

I see it as 20+40=60, 2+9=11 then 60+11=71.

To me it seems easier and can be done in my head a lot quicker

A few years back the neighbor was adding a side shed to his bigger shed. I looked at things for a few seconds and said "this thing is crooked" He was like ooh no it is right I measured it several times and it is "let us say 15x20" Well I said "did you measure across? He is looking at me as if I had two heads. I had him grab the tape measure and we went from the corner to the first stick. Other corner to the other stick. Both were perfect. Both sticks were 20 feet apart, Perfect. NOW let's measure corner to corner. One way was like 37 feet and the other way was like 39 feet. His head almost exploded till he understood what I had just showed him. He said "That would have been a crooked shed"!
Don't bother doing the math this is just an example...DUH

if you are using batter boards and strings to lay out the building, i come up with 23' 3-1/8 inch for diagonal measurement.

I don't think I've heard "batter boards" mentioned in about 45 years.

Greg,

I learned my basic math 60+ years ago and use "shortcuts" similar to the one you mentioned.

Not to nitpick again but I think you meant to say C = the square Root of Asquared + Bsquared.
