This was in an on-line auction the other day and was labeled as primative farm peice with no more info. It only brought $26 but I did not buy it but wonder what it was for. John

o a Google search on "Google Patent search" then enter "McCall Apr 6, 1875" and you'll find out it's a Sheep Shearing Chair patent #161622.

You are right the wooden bowl was used in making butter. It brings back memories and I don't know what my folk did with theirs.

Well done!

Barite's right.

Found an article that explains they set the sheep on the "chair" and leaned the sheep against the rack for shearing. Says the sheep remained calmer when sitting during sheering.

Brett, have you gotten to doing your own yet? my daughter got very good at blocking when she was showing, but we always called in a shearer.

We raise hair sheep, Katahdin/Dorper. No shearing needed. Shearing is why we now have hair sheep!

How long have they been around? If I remember right the Katahdin was a new breed around 1985.

Started in the 50's I think. We've had them for 10 years or so. Took a while to breed the wool out of my herd. We're trying to improve the carcass now.

I googled it and got something about a funeral service.Didn't think that was what I'm looking for so I quit and fixed lunch.
