Branson - other than shows and shopping, what to do

Hello,

I may be going to Branson MO soon. Have not been there in about 10 years. What are some good things to do/see other than shopping or shows? I have been to the museum at the College of the Ozarks before, is it still open? Would go again. Also been to the hatchery, nice on a nice warm day.

Interested in farming, hunting, shooting, autos, etc.

Thanks

There is a new car and tractor museum just as you come in to
town from the freeway. Also a great place to stay several miles
south of town is the Big Cedar Lodge. Fishing at it's finest on
the lake. Founded by the gentleman who founded Bass Pro
Shops. Worth while to go see even if you don't stay there.
Another nice place to stay or visit is the Chateau, up above the
hatchery and dam.

Lunch at Landry's Seafood.
Go buy that JD "B" at the toy museunm and get it out of the rain.
Supper at Rocky's Italian way downtown.
Me, I'd avoid that water-front area.

The museum was open last time I was there about 2 years ago. Interesting display on barbed wire. I didn't know there were so many types.

I'm telling you what,we went 11 years ago. I didn't have a whole lot of expectations so we only rented a cabin down on Arrowhead Point for three nights. We ended up renting it for another three. Don't miss Dogwood Canyon down south of town. We spent one whole day there. There's the cave tour out south of town,I'm drawing a blank right now on the name of that. The toy museum, winery tours,Bass Pro up in Springfield,a day trip down to Eureka Springs, some reptile zoo deal west of town, there just isn't enough time if you spent a month.

I'm shocked no one has mentioned Steal Your Dollar City. My
folks owned a condo at Emerald Point for about 10 years after
they quit farming. They still drive down there to go to that
blasted place about once a month! I can't stand it. It's full of
large folks eating that horrible hash and lye soap that will take
the top 7 layers of skin off.

My wife and I go there every October. We spend one day and the night and then head to Springfield to the farm fest. Wife has a few stores she likes and we both enjoy a favorite restaurant. That said it aint what it used to be. After the tornado a few years back some places never rebuilt. Most of the shows now are families trying to get rich. You see very few tour buses anymore. Tunica hurt them when the casinos were built. You take a bus load of elderly women and there gonna gamble over listening to some kid sing. Big names are all gone.

The RFD theater is a nice place. The Veterans museum and Titanic are fun.A little pricey but it is fun. Went thru the farm museum for the first time last year.Nice new facility, much bigger then the old one but you only need to go once. It's a used car lot under roof.

Go see the water front.Get a ice cream and watch the fire show. I still like old town too.

Somebody else mentioned the Hatchery and Dam.

Enjoy your trip.

Silver Dollar City will take a day to go through. Entertaining at least
but spendy to get in. Go after 3 on the first day and get in on a free
show after dark in the Hollow. Same ticket is good for the next day.
They have a good cave to tour, all for the same price. We usually go
in Oct for the craft artist theme they have then. Also might check
for discount coupons from some of the local stores.

Like RRLund said, drive down to Eureka Springs for
the day. Interesting little town. If you have
kids with you they'll love to ride the train. If
you're in the Joplin area, go to Carthage and see
the Harber Village Americana display. It's
unbelievable.

We've been to Branson 3 or 4 times, never to any shows but to Silver Dollar City. Wife and kids even liked it, fun place.

If you are into war history, there is a great war museum there. Lot of displays and the names of every soldier who was killed in every war since WW1 if I remember right. The sculpture in the WW2 hall is just incredible.

Stop and eat at Lamberts, between Springfield and Branson. Home of the throwed rolls. Expect to wait an hour, but worth it.

No Credit Cards, but Checks are welcome!

Thanks for the replys and info,

Someone else is arranging the lodging, but I will check out some of the suggestions for things to see and do. If I see anything interesting, I will post some pictures.

Thanks again.
