Hello all, I have been wanting to buy a skid steer for some time and with all of this snow and mud we have had this winter it is time that I do. I have found a low hour (<1500)John Deere 240 slid loader. I'm sure some of you know about the pros and cons of this machine. Any advice is welcomed. Thanks in advance !!!

They are an good skid steer just try to find one other than the first few years they where built. They had a lot of updates. Truthfully try to get one new enough that it was built in Dubuque. The earlier ones where built down south and they did a LOT of changing when they moved the production to Dubuque.

They arent bad, but I dont think they are GREAT.
The engines are cheap to rebuild it needed, and they are generally a reliable machine. The bad is they are heavy for their size, and the controls are kind of clunky. More like driving a dozer than a skidsteer in my opinion...

Its a good machine. That was the first skid steer in the 200 JD skid steer series. Like all first models they had some problems. The biggest complaint I've ever heard is they were too small for a lot of stuff. But for what you'd be doing, it'd probably be fine. We have a John Deere 260 and I love that thing to death lol. Has a lotta power and picks up way more than what its rated for. She's 1500+ hrs now. Never had a big issue. One thing you wanna look at is the "dash" or computer gauges. They'd short out and then the park brake would keep coming on durring use. I'm sure it been fixed by now, but our didn't start doing it untill 200hrs ago. Just a 500 dollar computer and now we have a machine with 200 hours on it.. Lol. Good luck
