1999 Ford F150 4.2L V6 Lifter noise

The other day when I started my F150 it had a serious lifter noise that did not go away as it warmed up. Oil level was good (1/2 quart low)so I topped it off, let it idle till warmed up. Noise did not go away. I decided not to drive it that day and took another vehicle. Came home late evening started it, no lifter noise. Oil was 3 months old, but not many miles, as this truck sets except on weekends. So to played it safe I did an oil change and added Lucas Oil Additive to it, this is the first additive ever in this engine and it has 257,000 miles on it. I said all that to say this, this engine has never ran quitter. I have put approximately 400 miles on it since the oil change and not a lifter noise since that day. I know some will not favor the Lucas Oil Additive, but I am sold on it. By the way I have always driven Ford and used Quaker State oil. This is by far the best truck I have ever owned.

Dear Sir: --
While I still have got breath in my lungs I will tell you what a dandy car you make. I have drove Fords exclusively when I could get away with one. For sustained speed and freedom from trouble the Ford has got ever other car skinned and even if my business hasen't been strickly legal it don't hurt anything to tell you what a fine car you got in the V8 --

Yours truly
Clyde Champion Barrow

I have to agree with you Gary - I have a 1998 F150 with the V6 and about a quarter million kilometers on it. It's been trouble free and the body has held up well, a lot better than the old Chevys I had before. Also use Quaker State oil in mine.

Look the intake gaskets over, I would suspect you have a coolant leak started. They can get minute amounts of coolant in the oil which will cause lifter noise. The gaskets can also cause oil usage, which might explain your level after so few miles. Ford used the same style of intake gasket on the 4.2 that GM has taken such a beating over, the Fords just take longer to show.

A good dose of Rislone (in the Winter) cleans an engine and helps it crank better in cold weather..

Good Safe way to slowly clean an engine...

When it was down 1/2 qt. you could have added a cup of ATF, topped up and run it for a while. The ATF will clean dirty lifters. HTH

There are a gazillion gimmicks out there, but I will ALWAYS buy into Lucas products without a second thought. They are the only (besides an ATF soak or something) additives that deliver just what they say and usually more. I can't tout the transmission additive enough. I put it in my school bus when reverse was no more and it didn't have the valve body pressure to shift through the gears. I did it to buy a week while a reman showed up.

I ended up putting another 10,000 miles on that school bus with that transmission shifting perfect. A school bus is not easy on a trans, either. I finally changed it because I got tired of worrying about it.
