Today is pie day.

Ironic I watched The Life of Pi last night (for the third time) and it was with a new woman in my life. She is spiritual beyond anything I will ever seek.

If you've never seen the movie, do take the time but be prepared to pay very close attention. It is a very deep thought provoking movie-----maybe you'll like it maybe you won't.

I'd say that five significant digits is plenty good enough for most anything pi would be needed for in the every-day world!

My 7th grade daughter's math class had a contest to see how many digits they could memorize. She has a good memory and got around 20 but came in second to a friend of hers who must have been really looking for something to do in the days leading up to Friday.

Maybe because you were not here for the last pi day. If you don't celebrate it today, you will have to wait another 100 years for it to come around again. I don't think I will be here for it then so we are having a pie today to celebrate pi day. An interesting but totally useless bit of information, but a good excuse for a pie!

The difference between 3.1416 and the true value of pi amounts to one inch on the circumference of a circle 2 miles across. I think it's probably accurate enough.

(quoted from post at 11:52:14 03/14/15) If you remember your high school algebra, pi is used for figuring the area of a circle. At 53 seconds after 9:26 this morning, the date will be 3 14 15 9:26:53.
Celebrate Pi Day

For our ffa banquet each year, members' families bring pies for dessert and the ffa springs for the food. We were talking about it at school the other day- I said something along the lines of the day after the banquet being the best part because we get to eat all the leftover pies. We call it pie day. This year, I got corrected by one of my students about pi day being March 14. I enjoy our pie day much more so than pi day.

that reminds me that years ago i was designing a bridge on a curve and all the calculations had to go to the center point of the curve and then back out to the bridge--we were having lots of trouble getting different numbers and finally had to buy new calculators that went out 14 places past the decimal

(quoted from post at 06:05:41 03/14/15) Have it memorized as 3.1416 (not accurate enough)

Just curious, what are you doing with it that requires more accuracy than 3.1416?

I seriously doubt that you needed 14 decimal places to design a bridge. The 14th decimal place represents the diameter of a hydrogen atom compared to one mile - probably not very significant in the overall scheme of things.
