Brandon, How far in what direction are you from Gouvenour? Do you know Stan and Dee Putnam in Fowler?

(quoted from post at 05:40:02 03/13/15) I'm about half an hour north of Gouverneur. I can't
say that I know those people. There are some
Putnam's over my way.
Not likely that they are related as my friends relocated up there from southern NH.

I'm about 10 miles north of Gouverneur. We have both Putmans and Putnams here. I'm related to the Putmans.

(quoted from post at 06:38:15 03/13/15) Strange that people would relocate to around here.
Did he work at the zinc mine over there or
something?

He was teaching computer at a nearby very large high school, and his kids were in 4H with a sheep project with our kids. He got it in his head that he wanted to farm. He found a good deal on a farm in Fowler. We were talking and I asked him if it was a free stall or tie stall barn. He answered "What?" So they packed up and became dairy farmers. The seller helped them with the first milking and was gone. Another friends son went with them and was a big help, and his kids had a good upbringing there on the farm, even though it was tough going most of the time. They sold the cattle off about two years ago. Last time I was up there about 15 years ago it sure looked like a pretty depressed economy.

Yup. still a depressed economy, always has been too. It's a combination of distance, weather, population, taxes, low wages and climate. Add in that the dairy industry is volatile at best...it can be tough.
