Short syrup season

We have been in a deep freeze for the last several weeks, it finally warmed up and the trees began to run. Ran good for two days and has all but quit. Looking ahead we are heading for 50+ for the next week. Compared to last year, we started 2 and a half weeks late and looks like it will end a week early. Didn't get enough to run it through the evaporator and draw off any syrup. Most likely will drain and finish what we have in a turkey fryer.........

Guy down the road has a really small front yard and every tree is a sugar maple. Looks like he is tapping every tree. Don't know the fella so can't say how he is doing.

Here in NY it is common to have some temps in the 50s during syrup season. We don't pull our taps till the buds start to swell and the sap turns a nasty color. I imagine it must be different in Ohio.

I do not think your done yet. Looks warm this week but next week supposed to return to below freezing at night. Just hope you did not tap too early, hard to wait when you know spring is close. I hear that it is not uncommon to make syrup into April after a cold winter. My first try at making syrup was in the mid nineties and I was making syrup in April. A neighbor told me that was not common in his experience. Trick is to be ready when conditions are right.
