John Deere 2510 and 2520

So I dont know much about John Deeres New Generation
tractors besides if you can find one for 5k you buy it lol. My
question is, what was the idea behind the 2510 and 2520?
They're both identical to a 3010 and 3020. Both 4 cylinder gas
or diesel option. What made John Deere build them, and what
makes them so desired and high in vaule? Besides "rarity."

I feel that rarity and lower production numbers is what makes them valuable. They are essentially a 3020 with 2020 engine, waterloo tractor with Dubuque engine. 2520's seem more valuable seeing they are side console and low production numbers.730,3010, and 2510 are all about the same HP, 55.

I have a 2510 and in my opinion it is the handiest chore tractor made. It's horse power to weight ratio is good. It's very maneuverable and nimble for it's size.

There's a huge difference between a 2520 and 2510. Neither has a 2020 engine in them. The whole tractor is a good bit heavier than any 2020 ever dreamed of. When they came out with the 2510, it filled a void in HP ranges between the 2010 and the 3010. Even the early 3020 and 4020 models had a stronger engine with an older style transmission. They beefed up the trannys and then added a bigger engine in the 2520, which seemed to parallel the intro of the side console 3020 and 4020, which was also heavier and more HP. All three were much more operator friendly with the side console hydraulic controls. When they went to the -30 series and moved the shifters to the console, they made another big leap. The 2520 went through 3 serial splits, if I recall, and the engine got stronger as time went. It's also one of the easiest to replace with a newer series because of the number made and used in construction and other applications. The 3020 and 3010 didn't have that advantage- there just weren't as many made.

I have a 2510 that was gas, now 4.5l turbo diesel 4 cyl. Great tractor. Use it around the yard a lot, hayfield as mower and rake. It was primarily used to stack hay back when it was gas (Farmhand stacker).

straight off of tractor data.

"The John Deere model 2510 used a 2020 engine fitted to a modified 3020 chassis. The tractor met the need for a smaller row-crop tractor, still popular in the United States in the late 1960s."

The 2510 was a direct replacement for the 3010 which was a good seller. The 2510 uses the same 202 cubic inch engine as a 2020 and the trans is basically a 3020.The hyd system used a four piston pump that left a little to be desired. There was very little extra cost to Deere to produce a 2510 and they sold fairly good. In many areas they outsold 3020's.When new a 2510 was 54 hp and a 3020 was 70 so the 2510 filled an important sales gap. The 2520 did not sell as well because farms were getting bigger and most people bought 3020 and 4020 tractors. I have a 2510 and a 2520 diesel and really like both as they handle nice and are very snappy tractors to drive. Many collecters like them because they look like a scaled down 4020.

One of the reasons JD created the 2510 was to fill the gap for a mid 50s hp rowcrop tractor being vacated by the 2010 and 3010. The new 1020/2020 tractors were not designed with a tricycle front or rowcrop front.

The nebrasaka tests show both the 2510 and 2020 using the same engine. Plus several publications have summed up the 2510 as being a 3020 with a 2020 engine.

While very true, the 2020 was a replacement for the 2010, and IIRC the 2510 was in production. The 2020 was a handy little tractor, and the 2520 was the update on the 2510, and overall a better machine, IMHO- a bit heavier, and about ten more HP. And still probably the most used tractor I have.....

PTO clutch started slipping between 65-70HP, so no clue what the engine is running (clutch looked good). I wanted it set low for the small tractor, but after discussion he said whatever it was at would probably be fine as long as I was sensible with it. 11 years so far. The engine was in an enclosed construction trailer, it was just the engine left in the cart when I got to it. My favorite tractor to run around the yard for utility stuff, rides like a Cadillac in the field, and nothing phases the engine. I like a smaller tractor without a cab to mow/rake with, even if it's 100+, nice to see around, plus try to miss any animals I can.
